5-4A District Insider
Denton Guyer looks to get 2007 off to a great start against what should be an improved Carrollton Smith squad.  Denton hooks up with Frisco Centennial, while the third Denton ISD school Denton Ryan matches up with Mesquite Poteet.  Lake Dallas which is looking to get into the playoffs this year will meet up with former 5-4A power Sherman.  The Colony will meet up with Class 5A Weatherford.  Wichita Falls takes on Saginaw Boswell in what should be a competitive game, the lone idle squad is 5-4A favorite Wichita Falls Rider.

Carrollton Smith vs. Denton Guyer: Two teams with a lot of experience hook up Friday night, for Newman Smith the Trojans drop to 4A and they've got playoff aspirations. Guyer has been taking their lumps the past two seasons but now they are poised to dish some out. The key for the Wildcats will be the play of sophomore QB J.W. Walsh.  I'll take Newman Smith in the closest of games.
Frisco Centennial vs. Denton: After a 1-9 season in 2007 who better for the Titans to pick to beat up on than lowly Denton? QB Ryan Mossakowski could throw for over 300 yards in this one as Denton looks to be simply overmatched in this one.  Look for the recurring theme for Denton all season as they simply won't have the athletes to compete and things don't look much brighter for the futuer either.
Denton Ryan at Mesquite Poteet: Early word is this might be the best Ryan team since their first team in Class 5A, the Raiders are loaded with good skill talent like RB Jay Catlin and WR D.J. Beshears and DB Yahshua Williams.  Poteet is expected to be solid but this is a very difficult opener for the Pirates and I think Denton Ryan wins by double digits.
Lake Dallas at Sherman: These two teams swapped districts as Sherman moves from 5-4A to 9-4A and Lake Dallas joins 5-4A from 9-4A.  Both teams have marquee players as Sherman has RB Waymon James and Lake Dallas features junior QB James Franklin.  Sherman however has the better supporting cast and couple that with homefield advantage and I look for the Bearcats to get off to a good start.
The Colony vs. Weatherford: The Colony thinks they've got a shot to make the playoffs, and beating lowly Weatherford would be a great start. The Cougars will have the best player on the field in RB Tony Peoples, but the question will be can the Cougars slow down Chris Fielder and Weatherford's triple option attack? I think it'll be a high scoring affair but we'll take the Cougars.
Wichita Falls vs. Saginaw Boswell:  Wichita Falls on the offensive side of the ball has some playmakers but they've got questions up front.  Boswell has the athletes to really test the Coyotes especially with LB Emeka Ekwulugo.  On offense Boswell has changed formats and will be under center some as they'll look to pound it out with RB Donte Lipscomb and he could be the difference.

6-4A will be interesting to watch this year, Aledo is the favorite and should be Division 1 barring something crazy with Springtown and Mineral Wells both getting in which is unlikely.  The two EMSISD schools and Birdville will be the big dogs but Springtown has the talent and system to sneak up and bite one of those bigger teams, (see Saginaw and Boswell from 2007).     The Colony 2003                                             Denton Guyer 1994.5                                    Denton Ryan 1811                                          Wichita Falls Rider 1747                                                Denton 1479                                                   Wichita Falls 1468                                          Little Elm 1323                                               Lake Dallas 1126                                          *The top two teams in the district will advance to the Division 1 playoffs
