The Texas Longhorns must have been trying to break their recent pattern of keeping fans on the edge of their seat. In fact, it seemed no one in the Frank Erwin Center was in their seat at all. Instead, the sold-out crowd in Austin remained standing and rowdy despite a blowout 77-50 Longhorn victory over Texas A&M that never saw the Aggies in the lead.

Box Score

Revenge is sweet.

It appears the Longhorns (22-4, 9-2 Big 12) and the Aggies (20-6, 6-5) simply had different visions. The Horns saw a rim the size of a circus ring. The Aggies saw a rim the size of a wedding ring and only managed to hit 6-of-31 from the field during the first half and missed each of five attempts from beyond the arc. Texas drained 16-of-35 and more than doubled the Aggies field goal percentage 45.7 percent to 19.4 percent.

“Texas was great. They were unbelievable on offense,” Aggie head Coach Mark Turgeon said post game. “We just weren’t very good tonight…we missed a lot of shots and we lost our confidence.”

Texas’ impressive defensive performance saw the Aggies held to only 18 points at halftime. Sophomore Longhorn D.J. Augustin came out of a recent slump and put up 17 of his own in the first half and hit 9-of-14 overall. He led his team with 3-of-5 from three-point range and 27 points by the time the final buzzer rang. With 3:02 remaining, a successful free throw made Augustin the 29th player in University of Texas history to cross the 1,000 career point line.

“I was aggressive and the ball was falling tonight,” Augustin said. “I felt good shooting and my teammates did a great job of keeping A&M moving and knocking their shots also.”

A jumper by Augustin 28 seconds in set off a 16-4 run that would see Texas keep the Aggies at bay by no less than ten points in the first half and 21 points in the second half. Freshmen Alexis Wangmene added two of his own to the scoreboard with 30 seconds left in the game to give the Longhorns a game-high 27 point lead when things wrapped up. Guard Damion James cleaned the board nine times and sophomore Justin Mason brought down eight boards.

“Our defense was really good and that’s where we’ve improved. We also got great play from our bench tonight. I thought Clint (Chapman), Alexis, J.D. (Lewis) and Dexter (Pittman) carried themselves well and they are really important to us,” Texas head Coach Rick Barnes said.

Aggie junior Josh Carter led his team with 11 points and cleaned the glass three times. Forward Bryan Davis and guard Donald Sloan both led their team with 8 rebounds.

Rebounds appeared to be a diamond in the rough for A&M. Overall. The Aggies led the Longhorns with 41 boards compared to Texas’ 40. Offensively, Texas A&M dominated the Horns with 21 boards to Texas’ 12. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to make up for a dismal time landing the ball in the rim and Texas’ best defensive effort of the year. Last time the two teams met was January 30th and A&M came out ahead 80-63 in College Station.

“We whipped them, they whipped us,” Turgeon said. “They wanted to pay us back and they did.”

Texas is now 16-5 against the Aggies with Rick Barnes.

The Longhorns next take on Oklahoma on Saturday in Austin. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
