Class 5A Games
Region I DFW Games
Burleson (4-5A, 0-0) vs. Arlington Seguin (15-4A, 0-0) -- Burleson gets a chance to start out the season like they did last year with a victory. Arlington Seguin has yet to have a statement victory, but I think they have the defense with Burleson's lack of returning starters on the offense to create a mismatch. I think it is a small upset, by Seguin by a touchdown.
Matt's Pick: Arlington Seguin
Mansfield (4-5A, 0-0) vs. Haltom (5-5A, 0-0) -- Both teams are looking to improve last year. Even though Mansfield technically Is an underdog, they are a team that will significantly jump up with the first revision of the rankings at the end of this weekend, and I think they will have an undefeated record to back up that jump. Haltom will run and control the clock, but not consistently drive against Mansfield. Tigers by 17.
Matt's Pick: Mansfield
Midland Lee (3-5A, 0-0) vs. North Crowley (4-5A, 0-0) -- Last year, North Crowley got run out of the building by a Midland team that wasn't nearly as good as Midland Lee. This year, it could be more of the same. In one of the several battles between 4-5A and 3-5A, 3-5A should be a prohibitive favorite in this one. Look for Lee to win by 20.
Matt's Pick: Midland Lee
Abilene Cooper (3-5A, 0-0) vs. Weatherford (4-5A, 0-0) -- Both teams had great things to take away from the scrimmage, but I think Cooper is more apt to do it against other teams. Weatherford will put together a couple good defensive stands with their stud defensive line, but Abilene Cooper will run it right up the middle and win this game by 17 points.
Matt's Pick: Abilene Cooper
Granbury (4-5A, 0-0) vs. Cleburne (8-4A, 0-0) -- The Pirates have the chance to start the season out right with a solid victory over an improving Cleburne team. I don't think Cleburne has improved enough to mask the depth advantage that even a small (for 5A standards) Granbury squad will have. I think Steven Darrow is the difference as Granbury wins by 9.
Matt's Pick: Granbury
Mansfield Summit (4-5A, 0-0) vs. Arlington High (8-5A, 0-0) -- My new theory of the importance of quarterbacks may be upset by this game - but it exists enough to put an UPSETWATCH on this game. Arlington's best returning player is its quarterback, and Mansfield Summit has to replace a UT commit with a wide receiver. Arlington is competitive but their defense gives up too much. 35-31 type of score for this one for Summit.
Matt's Pick: Mansfield Summit
Colleyville Heritage (5-5A, 0-0) vs. Cedar Hill (8-5A, 0-0) -- I expect this to be a scoring fest -- for at least the first quarter. Perhaps a 14-14 first quarter score - but then, Cedar Hill buckles down and puts the beatdown on Colleyville. I think Cedar Hill may throw up 40 by late in the 3rd, and then the 2nd team comes in and gives up a score for a 45-21 final.
Matt's Pick: Cedar Hill
The Colony (9-4A, 0-0) vs. Richland (5-5A, 0-0) -- The quarterback position are huge questions for both teams. In typical The Colony fashion, they ran away another coach with a pretty good quarterback, but some argue that the incumbant quarterback was better. Richland will have to replace Joe Kemp. I think Richland's defense is the key in this contest, and Richland keeps The Colony under 14 in a 21-13 type of score.
Matt's Pick: Richland
Lewisville (6-5A, 0-0) vs. Grand Prairie (7-5A, 0-0) -- When one thinks back to the good old days of Fighting Farmer football, one would think of a smothering defense and a methodical offense. This team could have that combination - even with the spread instead of the wishbone. Lewisville should show why they will be a threat in district with a convincing 10-13 point victory over Grand Prairie to start the season.
Matt's Pick: Lewisville
RL Turner (6-5A, 0-0) vs. McKinney North (9-4A, 0-0) -- This could be a possible upset. How far has McKinney North fallen from last season? Their 49-0 loss in a full game scrimmage to Sherman didn't seem to inspire much confidence, despite their preseason #13 ranking. I bet this game is much closer than anyone would think, but I believe McKinney North wins by 10.
Matt's Pick: McKinney North
Irving Nimitz (7-5A, 0-0) vs. Carrollton Creekview (6-5A, 0-0) -- Injuries have been a real problem with Creekview this season, and I think in the first game, Nimitz will be able to capitalize on that. Creekview's thin depth will show in this game, and Nimitz will wear down Creekview. Field position and turnovers are the keys in this game. Nimitz wins a 13-10 type of game.
Matt's Pick: Irving Nimitz
S. Grand Prairie (7-5A, 0-0) vs. Plano West (9-5A, 0-0) -- S. Grand Prairie and Plano West played an exciting game last year that went down to the final minutes. Plano West's offense is almost brand new, but SGP's defense is very experienced. I think that matchup gives SGP the slight edge in this game. SGP holds Plano West to a 28-17 type of win for SGP.
Matt's Pick: S. Grand Prairie
Irving (7-5A, 0-0) vs. Arlington Lamar (8-5A, 0-0) -- Irving will probably win a game this year, but I don't think it will be this one. Arlington Lamar has enough size and depth to push around Irving's defense - and Irving's offense has yet to have a solid running back come in and eat up the yards like is needed in Coach Bennett's offense. Lamar wins by 17 points.
Matt's Pick: Arlington Lamar
Jesuit (7-5A, 0-0) vs. Bishop Lynch (Private, 0-0) -- This game was so intense for awhile, the adminstrators had to shut it down. It is back, and at Haggar Stadium, it should be an intimate and intense atmosphere. Jesuti is playing at the highest level and has drawn the private school athlete depth that want to play at that level. Jesuit should be good enough to win by 10.
Matt's Pick: Jesuit
Naaman Forest (10-5A, 0-0) vs. Sam Houston (8-5A, 0-0) -- It doesn't get much closer in the rankings than Sam Houston and Naaman Forest. Sam Houston losing their running back really hurt, and early in the season, Naaman Forest bringing back Levi Keefer at quarterback makes a huge difference. Naaman finds a way to win this game by 10 points.
Matt's Pick: Naaman Forest
Region II DFW Games
Mesquite Horn (12-5A, 0-0) vs. Richardson Berkner (9-5A, 0-0) -- This has the makings to be a very competitive game. Richardson Berkner is just going to have too many horses when all is said and done with this game. I expect a game that scores touchdowns that focuses on defenes while both teams try to get off on a good start. I think Berkner wins a 21-7 type of game.
Matt's Pick: Richardson Berkner
Plano (9-5A, 0-0) vs. Mesquite (12-5A, 0-0) -- This is a great game which Plano beat Mesquite straight up on last year with both teams being pretty healthy. Both teams return significant starters. I think this is a game where home field advantage at a new John Clark makes Plano better than it actually is. In an upset, I like Plano to win with a 4th quarter drive to break a 17-17 tie. Plano wins 24-17 in an upset.
Matt's UPSET Pick: Plano
Lake Highlands (9-5A, 0-0) vs. Tyler Lee (12-5A, 0-0) -- In the third game of 12-5A vs. 9-5A, Lake Highlands gets Tyler Lee at home to avenge last season's loss. I do think this will be competitive for the first half of the game, but Tyler Lee's size will wear down Lake Highlands in the third and Tyler Lee puts them away in the fourth quarter by 7 points.
Matt's Pick: Lake Highlands
Allen (9-5A, 0-0) vs. Garland (10-5A, 0-0) -- Garland has had Allen's number the past couple of years. What makes this an intrieguing game is that Allen brings back, arguably even more than Southlake, the most explosive returning offense in the area. Huge questionmarks on defense. Garland brings back one of the best defenses, but huge questions on offense. Allen's defense answers late to win a 42-35 type of game.
Matt's Pick: Allen
Waco (16-4A, 0-0) vs. Wylie (9-5A, 0-0) -- Wide Awake Wylie is in for a thrashing on Saturday afternoon at the HEB classic. Waco, a team that is quite honestly pissed off after losing in the state championship will take out 8 months of frustration on Wylie. Waco's defense will be smothering and the offense will run wild. Waco wins by 31.
Matt's Pick: Waco
Frisco (9-4A, 0-0) vs. Lakeview Centennial (10-5A, 0-0) -- After Frisco clobbered Lakeview Centennial this past season, it would go to show that Frisco would be a huge favorite. I think Frisco's team last year was more of an abberation and not a trend. I think Lakeview Centennial, in a minor upset, pulls off a single digit margin victory.
Matt's Pick: Lakeview Centennial
North Mesquite (12-5A, 0-0) vs. North Garland (10-5A, 0-0) -- The nucleus of North Garland's chances this year will be how well their young sophomores mesh with the seniors. North Mesquite already had that solid nucleus, so they should have their way with North Garland. In Coach Robinson's first game, North Mesquite should have an easy three touchdown victory in a 42-21 type of game.
Matt's Pick: North Mesquite
Rowlett (10-5A, 0-0) vs. Fossil Ridge (6-4A, 0-0) -- This game goes immediately on upset watch. With Rowlett having a good group of players back and Fossil Ridge losing their running back, Fossil Ridge might be just ripe for an upset. Rowlett is an improved team this season, but I don't think they will have the offensive line to compete with Ridge's defensive line. Fossil Ridge wins in a close one by 8.
Matt's Pick: Fossil Ridge
South Garland (10-5A, 0-0) vs. Temple (13-5A, 0-0) -- South Garland gets a bit of a reprieve not having to play Waco High in the first game. Waco and Temple swap opponents. South Garland should be able to roll over Temple. Temple did a major overhaul of their coaching staff and will be better, but not good enough to stay within 21 points of a very athletic South Garland team.
Matt's Pick: South Garland
Midland (3-5A, 0-0) vs. Rockwall (10-5A, 0-0) -- Rockwall should have an easy time with Midland - even on the road. Midland is one of the lower tier teams in 3-5A, and Rockwall will have a chance to defend the metroplex honorably. Midland is a solid program, but Rockwall starts out the season with a 21 point victory over Midland High.
Matt's Pick: Rockwall
Kimball (0-0, 14-4A) vs. Dallas Carter (0-0, 11-5A) -- This should be an excellent game as always. Carter has a bit of an unknown to it - other than the fact several people have told me they have a deep senior class this season. Kimball has returning talent - much more than Carter - and they played Carter close last year. In my first upset pick of the season, I look for Kimball to take out Carter by a touchdown.
Matt's UPSET Pick: Kimball
North Dallas (0-0, 13-4A) vs. Molina (0-0, 11-5A) -- Molina had a great season last year - starting the season 4-0 including a convincing win over Molina. Molina is returning significant starters - but they have yet to have a real significant skill player step up. This makes the score a little closer than otherwise it would be, but Molina is a heavy favorite - at least three touchdowns.
Matt's Pick: Molina
Sunset (0-0, 11-5A) vs. Spruce (0-0, 13-4A) -- This is a very interesting game. Sunset has a solid player like Rossun Johnson which will lead the team in games like this. Spruce has more overall depth but it is lacking the star player. In a game early, depth should take over - but since I am going on a limb to say Sunset makes the playoffs, I have to support them in their first game. Sunset by 8 points
Matt's Pick: Sunset
Samuell (0-0, 13-4A) vs. Bryan Adams (0-0, 11-5A) -- Samuell has some solid athletes this season, and Bryan Adams has some good coaching. Samuell's solid athletic team should have its way with Bryan Adams. This game might even get ugly. I look for Samuell to win this game by at least 3 touchdowns - possibly four touchdowns in a statement game.
Matt's Pick: Samuell
Lancaster (0-0, 15-4A) vs. WT White (0-0, 11-5A) -- Despite having one of the better classes that WT White has ever had, they will need a miracle and a perfect game to even be within a touchdown of Lancaster. Lancaster has size, speed and confidence they can win this game. It is a dangerous combination for a team like Lancaster. The Tigers win in a big blowout - by at least 28.
Matt's Pick: Lancaster
Class 4A Games
Region I DFW Games
Hillcrest (0-0, 13-4A) vs. Sherman (0-0, 5-4A) -- A couple of years ago, this was a pretty solid matchup. This year, Sherman is far and away the better team. This game gets ugly by halftime and even uglier by the end of the game. Sherman's size and speed will be too much as Hillcrest has some skill players. Look for a 42-14 type of game in Sherman's favor with the second team getting considerable time.
Matt's Pick: sherman
Denison (5-4A, 0-0) vs. Greenville (10-4A, 0-0) -- Denison had a solid scrimmage, and they are starting a lot of youth this season. Greenville has a lot of talent, and Greenville has had a couple of great scrimmages as well. I think this could have the potential to go either way, but I really like Greenville to win this game by at least 10 points to kick off their season.
Matt's Pick: Greenville
FW Western Hills (7-4A, 0-0) vs. Denton (5-4A, 0-0) -- This game has been a solid game as of late. Denton and Western Hills have had several entertaining battles over the last several years. This one, I do not think will be as entertaining. I think Denton will have the talent advantage and put away Western Hills in the third quarter - and will ultimately end up with a 20 point victory.
Matt's Pick: Denton
Red Oak (15-4A, 0-0) vs. Denton Guyer (5-4A, 0-0) -- Denton Guyer has not won a varsity game in its history. I think that changes against Red Oak. A new coach and a new system, meanwhile Guyer has plenty of players returning - I think for this week, they have the skill players and personnel to put it to Red Oak. I think it will be close, but Guyer wins late.
Matt's Pick: Denton Guyer
Wichita Falls (5-4A, 0-0) vs. Sweetweater (7-3A, 0-0) -- Sweetwater is a solid 3A team, but they are in a different category than Wichita Falls - and not a good type of category. Wichita Falls should have a huge night - the skill players will shine, and look for the Coyotes to put up 40 against a smaller 3A defense.
Matt's Pick: Wichita Falls
WF Rider (5-4A, 0-0) vs. Wolfforth Frenship (4-4A, 0-0) -- Many people call this the game of the week. It has the potential to be good, but I do think Rider's offense will expose Frenship's defense. Several individuals in the Waco pressbox mentioned that if Frenship gets down, they may mail it in - which was posited in Frenship's last game against Waco. I think Rider jumps out early and holds on to a 14 point convincing win.
Matt's Pick: WF Rider
Aledo (8-4A, 0-0) vs. FW Brewer (6-4A, 0-0) -- This game could get ugly before it gets better. Aledo's defense could pitch a shutout, and their offense could put up 40 points. Those two factors probably make the Brewer coach a little restless tonight. Aledo should win this game by at least 5 touchdowns.
Matt's Pick: Aledo
Alvarado (8-4A, 0-0) vs. Birdville (6-4A, 0-0) -- Birdville will struggle against physical defensive lines with speedy rushers. That blueprint does not exist in Alvarado. Birdville should have its way and has enough of a talent gap to win this game by at least three touchdowns.
Matt's Pick: Birdville
Azle (6-4A, 0-0) vs. FW Arlington Heights (7-4A, 0-0) -- Arlington Heights has looked very beatable - and despite Azle not having solid talent this year, I do believe they will have enough to up-end Arlington Heights. There may be a small shift in the power in 7-4A, and Azle may expose that with a 15-18 point victory against Arlington Heights.
Matt's Pick: Azle
Mineral Wells (8-4A, 0-0) vs. Springton (6-4A, 0-0) -- Mineral Wells may be an above average team in an above average district which might make it an average team. With that, I think it will look to build momentum within its non-district games. This is a winnable game for Mineral Wells, and I expect them to take this game by about 17 points.
Matt's Pick: Mineral Wells
Saginaw (6-4A, 0-0) vs. FW South Hills (7-4A, 0-0) -- Saginaw starts its darkhorse year against South Hills. Look for Saginaw's air game to put some distance between it and the Scorpions. Saginaw may be pretty good this year, and they should set the temp with a big win against South Hills.
Matt's Pick: Saginaw
Adamson (0-0, 14-4A) vs. FW Carter Riverside (0-0, 7-4A) -- Carter Riverside started last season by blowing out Adamson. This year, Adamson returns significant starters and a pretty good running back. In this type of game, a player like Deaires Lynn can make the difference. Look for Adamson to avenge last year's loss in a big win - Adamson by two touchdowns.
Matt's Pick: Adamson
Kennedale (12-3A, 0-0) vs. Everman (8-4A, 0-0) -- Everman shook off the Kennedale curse in a big way last season. This season, I expect more of the same. Look for a big explosive first half and a pedestrian second half. Everman by 35 plus points.
Matt's Pick: Everman
Region II DFW Games
Terrell (10-4A, 0-0) vs. Lake Dallas (9-4A, 0-0) -- Lake Dallas graduated their best senior class in a long time and Terrell is a team on the way up. Lake Dallas will get to reveal their always tough defense this season - and it will have some great talent. Terrell could surprise some teams this year, but I don't think it will be against Lake Dallas. It is closer - but Lake Dallas wins by 17.
Matt's Pick: Lake Dallas
Sanger (8-3A, 0-0) vs. Little Elm (9-4A, 0-0) -- On paper, this is an extreme mismatch. Little Elm has huge firepower, and our resident 3A guru thinks very little of Sanger this season. I tend to agree. Little Elm puts up their first game of 40 plus points, and their defense keeps Sanger under two touchdowns for a very convincing opening season victory.
Matt's Pick: Little Elm
Sulphur Springs (11-4A, 0-0) vs. McKinney (9-4A, 0-0) -- Sulphur Springs is not a very good team this season, and McKinney will have to adapt with youth taking over. My new focus is that teams that tend to excel tend to have great quarterbacks these days, and McKinney's sophomore phenom has been playing baseball through this week. I think if played later, McKinney would win - but in week 0 - Sulphur by 18.
Matt's Pick: Sulphur Springs
West Mesquite (10-4A, 0-0) vs. Corsicana (15-4A, 0-0) -- Corsicana is a team that has several great receivers - including Omarius Hines, who can change a game. Their scrimmage did not inspire much confidence. I think with West Mesquite being on the rise, we see a small upset at home. Look for West Mesquite to win this game by less than a touchdown.
Matt's Pick: West Mesquite
Forney (10-4A, 0-0) vs. Whitehouse (12-4A, 0-0) -- Whitehouse played Forney in the East Texas classic, and it was a competitive game. Forney this year is expected to be much better - and beating Whitehouse could jump them up in the ratings. Whitehouse just returns too much, and although in Forney it will be a competitive game, Whitehouse should win by 10 points.
Matt's Pick: Whitehouse
Highland Park (10-4A, 0-0) vs. Waxahachie (15-4A, 0-0) -- This should be a great game to end the Tom Landry Classic. Waxahachie is a team that may be on the way down according to Little Matt - but on paper, with a returning quarterback, they should have an early advantage. i like for Waxahachie to hold a lead through three quarters, but Highland Park's discipline wears them down for a very close 3-7 point victory.
Matt's Pick: Highland Park
Seagoville (0-0, 14-4A) vs. Thomas Jefferson (0-0, 13-4A) -- This game starts off the season - and although they are only three spots away in the big picture, there is a significant gap between #62 and #65. Seagoville doesn't have as good of a team as last season, but they are much better than Thomas Jefferson. Look for Seagoville to win by 4 touchdowns.
Matt's Pick: Seagoville
Woodrow Wilson (0-0, 13-4A) vs. Atlanta (0-0, 15-3A) -- Atlanta, or Phatlanta as we like to call it to Josh Ellis, has started to run the spread offense - for the first time in the history of the school. There will be some adjustment period for Atlanta to get things going well - and playing a speedy defense will not help. This game gets ugly - and I look for Atlanta to get shut out 35-0.
Matt's Pick: Woodrow Wilson
Pinkston (0-0, 14-4A) vs. Bishop Dunne (0-0, Private) -- Pinkston has some great athletes, and even though they don't have the depth to be a solid 4A squad, they should have the talent to out run a private school team. Look for Nathan Sowells to have a big game as Pinkston should get by Bishop Dunne - despite a so-so defense. Pinkston by 14.
Matt's Pick: Pinkston
South Oak Cliff (0-0, 14-4A) vs. Madison (0-0, 11-3A) -- South Oak Cliff has a great offense and defensive line and it is the strength of their team. Madison graduated a great offensive and defensive line and that is where the questions will be for Madison this season. Early in the season, this should give South Oak Cliff a significant advantage. SOC by 17.
Matt's Pick: South Oak Cliff
Class 3A Games
Region I DFW Games
Altus (Out of State) vs. Vernon (6-3A, 0-0) -- Vernon will be a bit down this season, but they are going to be good enough to beat Altus in the battle of US-283.
Matt's Pick: Vernon
Decatur (8-3A, 0-0) vs. Burkburnett (6-3A, 0-0) -- The only sure bet in 6-3A is that Burkburnett will probably finish last in that killer district. Decatur should have its way with them - by at least 24.
Matt's Pick: Decatur
FW Diamond Hill Jarvis (11-3A, 0-0) vs. WF Hirschi (6-3A, 0-0) -- This game used to be a game to determine who will win a game - with Hirschi's resurgence - it's just a blowout. Hirschi by 35.
Matt's Pick: WF Hirschi
Iowa Park (6-3A, 0-0) vs. Argyle (8-3A, 0-0) -- Iowa Park will give argyle a little bit of a taste of West Texas and a first round opposition. Argyle has a great passing attack and they should have a good defensive test, but they should win by two touchdowns.
Matt's Pick: Argyle
Bowie (8-3A, 0-0) vs. Whitewright (14-2A, 0-0) -- Whitewright has had some solid consistency in the 2A ranks. Bowie's consistency has been consistently bad. Look for Whitewright to handle them fairly easily.
Matt's Pick: Whitewright
Gainesville (8-3A, 0-0) vs. Paris (11-4A, 0-0) -- Both teams have gotten significantly better - unfortunately, Paris was 20 points better last year and they will be about the same this year.
Matt's Pick: Paris
Region II DFW Games
Celina (9-3A, 0-0) vs. Robinson (17-3A, 0-0) -- Both teams made it to the state championship game last season - but both teams came up a little short. Straight up, Celina should be the better of the two teams by at least 17 points.
Matt's Pick: Celina
Commerce (10-3A, 0-0) vs. Bonham (9-3A, 0-0) -- The Purple Warriors have a new coach and a new attitude. I have faith in Coach Hall's program, and since Commerce looks way down - look for them to start their program on a good foot.
Matt's Pick: Bonham
St. Marks (TAPPS, 0-0) vs. Pilot Point (9-3A, 0-0) -- St. Marks will always give you a good game - but Pilot Point should have the speed and talent to win. I think they will get a win - but it will be tough. Pilot Point with a one touchdown victory.
Matt's Pick: Pilot Point
Lake Worth (11-3A, 0-0) vs. Prosper (9-3A, 0-0) -- Lake Worth has a great returning crew to work from and some solid running backs. I look for them to control the clock and have a touchdown victory.
Matt's Pick: Lake Worth
Nevada Community (10-3A, 0-0) vs. Whitesboro (9-3A, 0-0) -- Nevada Community has not had a solid season - well, ever since I've been covering them. Whitesboro should have a 14-17 point victory over the Community.
Matt's Pick: Whitesboro
Princeton (9-3A, 0-0) vs. Ferris (13-3A, 0-0) -- Princeton will unveil the single wing against Ferris. Ferris will have no answer for it. Princeton by 28 points.
Matt's Pick: Princeton
Van Alstyne (9-3A, 0-0) vs. Paradise (10-2A, 0-0) -- Even with a new coaching staff - Van Alstyne is still Van Alstyne - and until they re-incorporate their city - a tiny town called Paradise will be as such.
Matt's Pick: Paradise
Mineola (15-3A, 0-0) vs. Quinlan Ford (10-3A, 0-0) -- Quinlan Ford should be much improved this season. Mineola, although a nice team, probably won't have the speed to compete. Quinlan Ford wins by 15.
Matt's Pick: Quinlan Ford
Royse City (10-3A, 0-0) vs. Kaufman (13-3A, 0-0) -- Although Kaufman is much improved, Royse City is one of the best 3A teams in the state. I don't think Kaufman has the defense to slow Royse City down. Royse City scores over 40. We'll see how good their defense is.
Matt's Pick: Royse City
Wills Point (10-3A, 0-0) vs. Athens (14-3A, 0-0) -- Athens should be much better this season. This is a very even match-up. Give Athens the edge early on this season with their skill players.
Matt's Pick: Athens
Kemp (13-3A, 0-0) vs. River Oaks Castleberry (11-3A, 0-0) -- Castleberry may contend for the third playoff spot this season. Kemp - well, they will languish at the bottom of a topheavy district. Castleberry starts their season on a good note.
Matt's Pick: RO Castleberry
Parish Episcopal (TAPPS, 0-0) vs. Carrollton Ranchview (11-3A, 0-0) -- Ranchview won this game last year, and I think they will start this season off on a good note as well. Look for them to have a great defensive game in shutting out Episcopal.
Matt's Pick: Carrollton Ranchview
Crandall (13-3A, 0-0) vs. Glen Rose (12-3A, 0-0) -- Both teams are much improved this season. Crandall showed good speed at quarterback against Brownsboro in a scrimmage - but I think Glen Rose has too many returning starters and they should win this game by a field goal.
Matt's Pick: Glen Rose
Salado (25-2A, 0-0) vs. West (12-3A, 0-0) -- Salado is a solid 2A squad - and they will give West all they want. The Kolaches will be served cold as Salado dominates this game.
Matt's Pick: Salado
Whitney (12-3A, 0-0) vs. Troy (25-2A, 0-0) -- To be quite honest, Whitney beating anyone this year will be a huge surprise. Troy is a good 2A squad and should dominate an undersized and undermanned Whitney.
Matt's Pick: Troy
Eustace (13-3A, 0-0) vs. Malakoff (20-2A, 0-0) -- Eustace does try to schedule teams that they have a good chance of beating. Malakoff and Eustace should be a good test, but I believe Eustace will come away with the win.
Matt's Pick: Eustace
Mabank (13-3A, 0-0) vs. Rusk (20-3A, 0-0) -- Mabank, thoroughly healthy, is one of the teams to beat. Since the season has just gotten started, they are healthy enough to make a difference. They should handle business against Rusk.
Matt's Pick: Mabank
Class 2A Games
Region II DFW Games
Windthorst (9-1A, 0-0) vs. Holliday (9-2A, 0-0) -- Windthorst has one goal this season - they want a state championship. Holliday is the first step to at least a long playoff run to get there.
Matt's Pick: Windthorst
Nocona (9-2A, 0-0) vs. Aubrey (13-2A, 0-0) -- Aubrey will likely be 3A next year - and they already have 3A numbers in football. Look for them to blow out Nocona by at least four touchdowns.
Matt's Pick: Aubrey
