SAN ANTONIO SUPER STUD OF THE WEEK: The New Braunfels Defense
There are some stats that catch the eye, and some that upon a glance can call for a head scratch. What the Unicorns in did in their 51-6 Guadalupe Bowl waxing of rival Seguin however was bordered on stupid. The Unicorns recorded nine, yes that is not a typo, nine interceptions in their romp marking the second straight year they have beaten the Matadors. New Braunfels ran three of their interceptions back for touchdowns including two by Oklahoma bound linebacker Tom Wort.
Jeff’s SUPER SEVEN Performances from Zero Week
Colton Palmer and Logan Vick, Kerrville Tivy
One of the most impressive wins during Zero Week in the San Antonio area was Tivy’s 49-28 victory over a San Antonio Roosevelt team that figures to be a major factor in the playoff race in 26-5A. The Antlers however shredded the Rough Riders through the air with Palmer going 29-for-32 with 324 yards and four touchdowns. Vick caught 12 of those 29 passes which went for 188 yards and he also notched a touchdown catch.
Robert Clay, RB, New Braunfels Canyon
For the third straight season the Cougars defeated Pflugerville Hendrickson to open the season thanks this time to a big night from Clay. The senior running back made the most of his 23 carried as he racked up 299 yards on the ground and scored all three touchdowns for the Cougars.
Kelvin Gray, RB, Blanco
From an individual standpoint Gray had what might go down as the best showing on a single game this season by a player in any region of the state. Gray carried the ball only three times but on all three rushes he scored on touchdowns runs of 53 and 67 yards and finished the game with 162 yards on the ground in the Panthers 63-0 win over Canyon Lake. In the third quarter Gray finished off his night with an interception return for a touchdown.
Stanley Harris, RB, Schertz Clemens
Like Gray, Harris was also electric every time he touched the football. Harris took two of his three carries on the night for touchdowns from 42 and 71 yards out and averaged more than 38 yards per carry in the Buffaloes’ 27-0 win over Eagle Pass.
Chuck Thornally, QB, Boerne Champion
In their first game ever (despite the fact that Champion has the same players and staff from Boerne High, which is closed for reconstruction) Thornally led the Chargers to a surprisingly easy 35-7 win over Midlothian. Thornally was 15-for-19 on the night for 242 yards and a touchdown and also added a two touchdowns on the ground.
Tony Polamo, QB, Floresville
The Tigers came into the season with the look of a playoff team and they certainly looked the part with a 42-18 win over San Antonio Fox Tech in their opener. Poloamo was brilliant under center carrying the ball 20 times for 252 yards and a touchdowns and he also threw for 100 yards and another score.
Aaron Green, RB, San Antonio Madison
One of the brightest sophomore stars in the San Antonio area, Green came through in a big way to lift Madison to victory over O’Connor. The brother of Scout.com three-star defensive back Andrew Green (who had a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown in the game), posted 125 yards, 94 of which came in the second half and scored three touchdowns in 35-28 victory for the Mavericks.
