While we love bringing you a good portion of high school news and updates, we also want to feature some of the state’s top athletes, while getting a quick look at what’s the latest on the college recruiting front. Today, we coach up with Pearland Dawson coach Eric Wells about his quarterback Darius Lazard.

Being just a second-year program, every game win or lose, goes down as a historic one. But when a team wins the regional final, as Pearland Dawson did Saturday afternoon against Friendswood, it’s a little more than just a playoff win.

“When you are a brand new school, every win is a great win, but when you are talking about playing in Week 14 and beating a great team like Friendswood with a lot of tradition to get to the semifinals, it’s truly amazing,” Dawson coach Eric Wells said of the 28-11 win at Galena Park ISD Stadium.

From start to finish, it was all Dawson as the Eagles set the tone early with a stellar defensive effort. And while there are many players who contributed to the win, it could be said that is starts with one.

Darian Lazard he is the most fierce competitor I have ever been around. This team rallies around and even the defense plays good when Lazard plays well,” Wells said of his star quarterback. “Everybody sees that he can put this team on his back, from his excitement, to the things that he says in the locker room and on the sideline. When the defense is on the field or the offense is on the field, he is our leader.”

In the win, Lazard, who is a Utah commitment, had 245 yards of offense and three touchdowns. On a few of the drives, Lazard was put into a position where the team needed to convert on fourth down.

And for Wells and the Dawson coaching staff, there is not another player who is most trusted when the game is on the line or there is a critical situation.

“When we line to go for it on fourth down, there are no doubts that when he has the ball we can get the first down. You know when we are going to go for it, he’s going to have his hands on it,” Wells said “Whether we run it with him or he is looking for someone to throw to with the chance to run it, we feel he can make the play.”

With that statement said, it is obvious that there is a level of confidence that resonates throughout the entire organization, from the coaches to the players.

They expect to win. They learned that in off season, summer and two-a-days,” Wells said. “They want to work harder than anybody they play, no matter who it is.”

Next week the Eagles will have a big test against Lake Travis next week. Game is set for Saturday 2 p.m. at Kyle Field in College Station.
