Turnovers are big in any game.
But they do much more damage in the postseason, especially in the later rounds of the playoffs. On the Brenham side of things, defensive back Jeremy Hall has had his fair share of interceptions.
In back-to-back weeks, Hall has come down with an interception. But his latest one may be remembered more than ever. In the final moments of the game against a top-ranked Angleton team, Hall pulled down the interception that sealed a 32-28 win for the Cubs.
Brenham was down 21-0 at halftime, but came out for the second half ready to turn the game around.
"When we came out the second half, I told Michael Walker and Terrell Reese that we need to step up and just take over this game," Hall said. "Coach told us that really they had three big plays. Our defense was stopping them. We just need to come out and play Brenham Cubs football and we came out with the win."
With less than a minute to go, Hall came down with a pick as Angleton was looking to move the ball down the field by way of pass.
" I was just telling the defense that we needed to make a play and cause a turnover," Hall said. "I was in coverage and fortunately I was the one who made the play."
That same time the day before, another defensive back was getting it done for his secondary crew.
From Brazoswood, Jelmon Woodard hauled in not one, but two interceptions. But the first one had a little extra incentive.
"We were in cover 2 and the receiver went out. And I remember from film how he comes out of his breaks and I went in and got it," Woodard said. "We watch a lot of film and it benefit me a lot in these games."
And it showed. The Buccaneers defense was stellar all night. In fact the Brazoswood recorded nearly 10 sacks on the day. For Woodard and his fellow guys in the secondary, bringing pressure on the quarterback, thus making these guy's jobs slighting easier.
"Whenever the pressure comes it forces the quarterback tot make bad throws.
I was able to get one of those bad passes," Woodard said.
Woodard and the Brazoswood team face off against Cinco Ranch this Saturday at Rice.
