Dynamic Collision: Westlake-Converse Judson

Westlake QB Tanner Price connected on 11-of-16 passes to lead team the Chaparrals past Converse Judson Rockets with an early offensive burst that included a 20-3 halftime advantage. TPI witnessed this clash of the titans and reports on the results from Judson Stadium.

Two Texas football dynasties clashed at Judson Stadium in Converse on Friday night. The dust had all but settled by halftime as Westlake cruised to an early 20-3 lead, en route to the 43-17 win over Converse Judson.

“We certainly don’t ever expect to get a lopsided win because we usually get everybody’s best,” Westlake coach Darren Allman said. “We felt like if we played well, took care of the football, and especially got them out them out of their enthusiastic mode early in the game we could run away with one.”

The Chaparrals quieted a Judson crowd used to seeing their team in the lead at home as they scored on three of their first four possessions.

With the win the Chaparrals (10-2) continue onto the Region IV semi-final game and the Judson Rockets (9-3) end their season.

Westlake quarterback Tanner Price led the attack on Judson’s defense, as he passed for 123 yards, and two touchdowns, along with 60 yards of rushing in the first half alone.

“Tanner’s had a lot big nights this year,” coach Allman said, “and he just keeps getting better and better. I said after last week’s game, ‘he’s a warrior’. He’s a great leader of our team, but he gives a lot of things to our offense. His ability to run the ball in a physical manner and then throw the ball in the way that he does, does a lot for us. Tanner has done a fabulous job of leading our team.”

Price finished the night 11-for-16 on pass completions for 215 yard through the air, along with 77 rushing yards.

A 32-yard pass from Price to Collin Shaw set up a one-yard touchdown run by Westlake running back Van Grammann with less than a minute left in the third quarter, to make the score 37-3. Garmann’s third touchdown run all but sealed the win for the Chaps.

“I had lots of good blocking,” Gramann said.

The Chaparral defense zoned in on the Rockets I-formation offense and kept them from scoring a touchdown until early in the third when Quaylon Jones scored on a 61 yard run.

The Rockets made it into the end zone once more in the game when quarterback Tristan Hernandez completed a pass to Jordan Montgomery for an 11-yard touchdown reception. The point after made the score 43-17 but proved, too little too late.

On their final possession — a gift via an errant pass from Westlake’s third string QB — the Rockets drove down to the two yard-line, but failed to push in the score as time expired.

The win means that the Chaps will practice on Thanksgiving Day, a rallying point on the way to a State Championship that many Texas coaches mark on the calendar mid-summer.

“It means you’ve had a pretty good year up to that point if you’re eating turkey and practicing the same day,” Allman said. “So we’re thrilled about that and we’re thrilled about going onto the next round.”

The win sets up a clash with an undefeated Harligen (12-0) next Friday at the Alamodome in San Antonio at 4 p.m.
