PITTSBURGH - Duquesne University guard/forward Melquan Bolding (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Notre Dame (Mass.) Prep) has been diagnosed with a fractured right wrist and will undergo surgery Tuesday morning to have a screw inserted to stabilize the fracture. He is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.

The 6-3 sophomore was injured on a hard foul by Nicholls State's Fred Hunter four minutes into Duquesne's 85-62 season-opening win over the Colonels on Friday night. Bolding went on to score a game-high 25 points, one shy of his career high, in 36 minutes.

An X-ray done Saturday revealed the break.

Bolding, who is right-handed, was evaluated by a hand and wrist specialist on Monday.

"Mel woke up on Saturday morning with significant swelling in the wrist," said Duquesne head coach Ron Everhart. "We had an X-ray done and the fracture was discovered.

"There is no question Mel is - and will continue to be - a big part of our team, continued Everhart. "I spoke to him late this afternoon and he is ready to have the surgery and get started on rehab as soon as he can."

Bolding, a member of the 2008-09 Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team, is Duquesne's third-leading returning scorer (9.9 pg.). He was instrumental in DU's run to the Atlantic 10 Championship title game last season, when he averaged 14.0 ppg. in four tournament games in becoming just the tenth freshman in Atlantic 10 history to earn a spot on the All-Championship team.

Duquesne (1-0) is in Iowa City, Iowa for a nationally televised ESPNU game at Iowa (0-1) on Tuesday night. Tip off is set for 9:00 (EST).
