While we love bringing you a good portion of high school news and updates, we also want to feature some of the state’s top athletes. Today, we feature Houston Westside wide receiver JaMarcus Williams. This TPI feature is free so enjoy.

Though this team has never been a push over, many would not have predicted the level of success the Houston Westside team is experiencing at this point in the season. At 6-2 and 3-0 in District 20-5A, the Wolves are in the driver’s seat for the title, despite the fact that both Chavez and Madison remain on the schedule.

Many facets and several key players make all of this happen. And if the ball is going in the air, there is a good chance that JaMarcus Williams will be on the receiving end.

In the recent 40-22 win over Bellaire, the 6-foot-4, 175-pound Williams had only three catches, but that was good for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

“I felt good about my game. I take the same approach to every game: Don’t take off any plays and don’t let down,” Williams said. “As a team, we practice to win after the big win we had over Lamar, I think that set the tone for us. But we are not looking back, we are looking forward.”

And the goal that resonates through the Westside organization is the playoffs, which after the recent win a spot is clinched. But this squad is well past mere appearances, which have become the norm.

For Williams and the Wolves, there needs to be some noise made to have a feeling of fulfillment for these guys.

“Feels good to already have a playoff spot, but we want to do better this year,” Williams said. “Last year we went in the first round against Eisenhower and lost. This year we are trying to get a better seed and try to get to at least third or fourth round. After that, we’ll just continue from there and see what happens.”

On the season, Williams is the No. 2 wide receiver in receptions, but No. 1 in total yards and touchdowns.

“I’m a big impact to the quarterback and to the rest of the receivers. I’m the leading the team in yards,” Williams said. “I just try and be there for the sophomores and underclassmen and help them.”

And while he is being of good service to his underclassman teammates, he is also trying get on someone’s roster for the 2010 season on the college level.

Not a whole lot going on, but there are a few interested.

“I don’t have any offers. I’m still waiting,” Williams said. “Kansas State and Texas A&M are the two schools writing me the most.”
