Stony Point’s 15 game winning streak in district play came to an end of Friday when they hit a roadblock against Cedar Park at A.C. Bible Stadium. The Timberwolves pulled off a 28-21 win against the Tigers, in the district 16-5A match up that went down to the wire.
“I’ve got to give them credit, Cedar Park played very well,” Stony Point coach Craig Chessher said. “It’s just one of those things, we’re human.”
On a Cedar Park team that has talent all over the field, quarterbacks Brian Hogan and Matt Posey proved the difference makers in a close game.
“Brian and I have practiced varsity all season and we felt confident we could come out here and make some plays,” Posey said.
Filling in for the injured quarterback Nathan Thornhill, the sophomore starter, Hogan, had three touchdowns and ran for 156 yards. Two of the touchdowns came on runs and third came on a pass. Hogan also completed a pass for a two point conversion.
The decisive play of the game came when Posey completed a 45 yard pass to Michael Darby late in the fourth quarter. The play set up a one yard Hogan touchdown run and gave the Timberwolves a 28-21 lead with 1:31 left in the game.
“Matt came in on third and long and made a great play,” Hogan said. “It’s what we needed.”
The Tigers fought back with their final series of the game and made it all the way down to Cedar Park 25 but could not complete a pass to put the ball past the goal line.
The win over the Stony Point team, ranked fourth in the state, marks the highest ranked team the Timberwolves have ever downed
“We knew we could play with them and we just came out and played our game,” Hogan said.
The Timberwolves (6-2, 5-0 District 16-5A) now have the top spot in the district ranking, but tough games against Westwood and Leander still sit between them and the district championship.
Next week Cedar Park faces Westwood, which has plenty of college level talent on their team.
“Coach Wood does a tremendous job with his program,” Cedar Park coach Chris Ross said. “I guarantee you they are going to be more than ready for the challenge.”
Coming off their first loss of the season, Stony Point (7-1, 4-1 16-5A) will face Vista Ridge next Thursday.
“Like I told [the players], we just need to keep our heads up,” Chessher said, “and we will come out next Thursday and play against Vista Ridge.”
