Upcoming Game of the Week: Del Valle v. Hutto
Last week Del Valle surprised most folks around the Austin area by totally dominating a very good Hendrickson Team 36-7. The night before over at AISD’s Burger Stadium, the red-hot Hutto Hippos blew threw a struggling Austin Akins team 42-6. Last years Del Valle –Hutto matchup was a very hard hitting game and I would expect the same this week as both teams come into the game sky high.
Team of the Week: Lake Travis
I know Lake Travis gets plenty of love already but watching LT shred a very good Cedar Park team 54-17 was something to behold. The LT offense can probably score on the Dallas Cowboys! LT is a program everyone should try to emulate. They are a perfect blend of talent, coaching and hard work.
Best Individual performance I saw for Week 2:
Michael Brewer QB Lake Travis HS. Young Mr. Brewer is following in the steps of former LT QB’s Todd Reesing (Kansas) and Garrett Gilbert (Texas) and just maybe might turn out to be the best of the bunch. Brewer passed for 365 yards and 3 TD’s and impressed EVERYONE with his strong arm, excellent mobility, and his football IQ. The kid is just special and a pleasure to watch.
Game Film Observations:
1. Georgetown v. Austin Anderson
Anderson got a huge game running and throwing from QB Sam Wehmeyer (#3 QB-JR). Wehmeyer finished with over 300 yards of total offense. Wehmeyer had several weapons to use against a struggling Georgetown team. Cameron Gravelle (#2 WR-SR) was a favorite target who had no difficulty getting open and when he was actually covered, still found a way to come up with a catch. Anderson also fields a potent ground attack led my RBs Jaron Abrams (#32 RB-SR), Javante Williamson (#24 RB-JR) and Andre Wheeler (#9 RB-SR). The trio has excellent speed and all three are great open field runners that can find a small hole and turn a short gain to a long TD easily.
Credit Georgetown’s Cody Ellerbee (#4 QB-SR) and Dylan Jensen (#44 RB-SR) for great effort and fight. Both played well and did what they could to keep the score somewhat respectable.
2. Converse Judson v. Pflugerville
Once again Storm Woods (#34 RB-JR) was the man for Pflugerville. Woods rushed for 243 yards and 3 TDs. JP Carruth (#24 RB-SR) also impressed when he caught a perfectly thrown ball from Alex Dean (#10 QB-JR). On defense, the play of linebacker Skody Robertson (#50 LB-JR) stood out on film with his range and ability to work down the line of scrimmage and then explode into several huge tackles throughout the game.
Converse Judson jumped out to the early lead which they would ultimately lose with a long TD run by speedy Gabriel Hilliard (#20 RB-SR). Hilliard showed natural skill in using his blocks to get to the corner and then turning on the jets to go 80 yards down the sideline. Equally impressive was fellow backfield mate Elliot Arnold (#5 RB-SR) who displayed incredible quickness, cutback ability and toughness running against a stout Pville Defense. Big Judson Tight End Colton Wiemers (#86 TE-JR) also stood out with several big catches including a short pass that he took to the house from 68 yards out.
3. Del Valle v. Pflugerville Hendrickson
Del Valle Quarter Back Josef Cortez (#14 QB-SR) dazzled the Del Valle faithful last week with big throw after big throw. Cortez ended up throwing for around 260 yards and 4 TDs. Cortez’s big throws mostly went to talented wideout Braylan Thomas (#15 WR-SR) for two of the four TDs thrown. Thomas seemed to have an uncanny knack for not just getting open – but getting WIDE open. The Cortez to Thomas combination was the story of the game besides Hendrickson turning the ball over 8 times.
Hendrickson linebacker Juan Asencio (#48 LB-SR) was he usual stellar self at LB but also saw some spot duty at RB and did a nice job despite having a nice 30 yard TD run called back on a holding call. Another bright spot for Hendrickson – there wasn’t too many – was Brandon Bedford (#21 RB-SR) who showed good hands and a great burst getting to the sideline and taking on contact. Bedford also had a nice goal line TD plunge for Hendrickson’s only points.
4. Austin Akins v. Hutto
Austin Akins took it on the chin from Hutto last week but did have a few players stand out with their performances. Chris Auld (#85 TE-JR) is a huge tight end with good hands and decent blocking ability. Auld is a favorite target of Akins Quarterback Knockus Sashington (10 QB-SR). Sashington is an athletic and elusive QB that teams need to pay attention to. Finally, wideout Corey Lotts (#3 WR-JR) had several very nice catches including one circus catch he managed while sliding on the ground and reaching against his body.
Hutto once again dominated with its run game. RB Darrin Allen (#28 RB-JR) tore massive holes thru the Akins D while Xaiver Wynn (#21 RB-JR) and Joel Rothrock #25 RB-SR) also had solid nights running the ball. On defense DB’s Demetrius Wilson (#7 DB-JR) and Jarari Prewitt (#26 S-JR) were all over the field breaking up passes or coming up with several big hits on Akins ball carriers before they could get started. Dederrick Hill (#68 DT-SR) also impressed at tackle with his explosion off the ball and several tackles in the backfield.

Each week I visit several coaches around Central Texas and collect game video as a Football Recruiting Producer (H. Horne Sports Video). I also get a chance to talk to football dads and moms, area sports writers, high school athletes and other folks in the know. My weekly report to TPI is the perfect forum to share these observations and inside info with other Texas HS Football lovers.
