There may still be a few kinks in the College Park machine, but that did not keep the Cavaliers from earning their second win of the season Friday night against Spring DeKaney 25-7 at Woodforest Stadium.
While the win is a good thing for College Park, coach Richard Carson would like to see a little more production in the offense. On the night, the Cavaliers gained only 251 total yards.
“Of course we are glad that Taylor (Parsons) is back. He is not 100 percent, but he’s back and we have to get a little more continuity on offense,” Carson said. “At first we didn’t have him and now we got him. Getting things together is what we need to do now. But this win is big and the kids want to have confidence in each other and in the coaches. Right now we are playing with some confidence.”
And for most of the game, College Park controlled the tempo for the duration of the game. Early on, neither team really got into a rhythm. College Park running back Aaron Osborne scored the only touchdown of the first half on a 6-yard run.
After half, both sides of the ball for College Park got fired up. On defense, linebacker Daniel Hilton led the charge with a couple of sacks and fumble recovery returned 35 yards.
“We are running a new defensive scheme. The kids are starting to figure it out and the coaches too,” Carson said.
For the offense, Osborne found the zone again for a 16-yard touchdown. He finished the game with 53 total yards. But it was fullback Paco Solano who led the Cavs’ rushing attack with 10 carries for 56 yards.
With Adrian Stewart out, Carson is excited to see Solano step in and do what the team needs.
“We have a good ground game with Taylor, Osborne and even Solano. Adrian Stewart started for us last year and he is hurt,” Carson said. “With Solano, he is a swing guy, a fullback/tailback guy. He is getting used to the fullback position. So with him and getting Taylor full speed, and being able to throw the football, I think that will help and we will be fine.”
On the throwing end of things, Parsons was 6-of-12 for 89 yards and touchdown pass to Ryan Kim, who had three catches for 41 yards and a score.
For DeKaney, only 131 yards of total offense, only 15 of which was passing yards. Leading the way for the Wildcats was running back Trey Williams with eight carries for 73 yards and a touchdown. He had eight receiving yards as well.
