If there is one thing that is for certain with the Spring football team, is that its attack can come from a variety of sources. More than six players had positive yards and contributed to the thrashing of Humble Saturday with a 42-7 victory.
For Spring coach Sonny Karas, the offensive attack has not really been a primary concern. So the 42 points was not what caught his attention. The fact that the Lion defense gave up only 191 yards and seven points is what has him most pleased.
“I looked from last game and we improved defensively and that was really important to me. That and our kicking game improved too,” Karas said. “We’re pretty good on offense, we have a lot of weapons over there and we know that will be our strength this year. But I was really happy with our defense.”
That defense was flying all over the field making plays. Guys like Devin Atkinson, Jeremy Jones and Robert Hunter each had sacks in the game and had Humble quarterbacks Javelle Green and Jacobe Green running trying to buy time.
Also, one fumble was recovered and Joseph Wilmore and Donta Burnett each hauled in interceptions.
“You can’t win in our district unless you play great defense and hopefully we’ll get better and see what happens after that,” Karas said.
Offensively, the Lions scored on nearly every possession. The ground game was on point early and often as Ridgeway Frank and DaRel Haynes led the way with 89 yards and 55 yards respectively. Each scored two touchdowns as well.
On the receiving end, Greg Livingston was the leading receiver with three catches for 79 yards and a score. Quarterback PJ Kopesky threw for 170 yards.
