Brownwood needed a 39-27 win over McGregor in round three of action while Celina downed Hitchcock 36-27. Brownwood’s closest pool contest came against Anahuac in a 35-34 first-round thriller.
Celina led all teams while scoring 105 points in its first two games – 59-27 over Bandera and 46-19 over West. They finished with 141 points, averaging 47 points per game.
In a series of surprises, highly regarded Abilene Wylie fell to Navasota 20-15 to finish second behind the Rattlers in pool G action. Also Graham, Cameron Yoe and Melissa finished 2-1 in pool D, making it the only pool without an unbeaten champion.
Battle of the unbeatens
Unbeaten teams entering Friday include Brownwood, Celina, Burnet, Gatesville, Glen Rose and Navasota. Gatesville has a strong receiving corp., and Navasota is playing in top form.
Single-round elimination games for Division II schools start Friday at 8 a.m. with quarterfinal games slated for 9:10 and semi-final action at 10:30. The championship division II game will be played Friday at 12:45 p.m. at Kyle Field after the consolation bracket final at 11:45 a.m.
Best 8 a.m. small school championship battle? Either Celina vs. Abilene Wylie on field 2A, or Navasota vs. Hitchcock on field 7A. Also Brownwood opens with Rockdale on field 1A.
Division I Starts Friday
With the 4A/5A schools kicking into gear Friday between 1-6 p.m. for pool play, this 64-squad bracket appears loaded.
