Academies provide familiarity for Renton

LB Colin Renton is averaging 10 tackles a game in

In the Greater Houston area, there is plenty of buzz going around about the stellar play of The Woodlands' football team. With an undefeated record, the Highlanders fell like this is their year. After a recent win, TexasPrepInsider's Ahmard Vital caught with linebacker Colin Renton to see how things are going…

When it comes to team success, The Woodlands linebacker Colin Renton is on high right now as he and the Highlander team have an undefeated 4-0 record. But the recent wins over Clear Lake and Port Arthur Memorial was the first time The Woodlands' defense had given up any points at all this season.

Of course, they have only given up 13 points in each game.

So far this season, the 6-foot, 205-pound Renton has been lining up at strong-side linebacker, but in rare cases (like against Clear Lake), he played more of an outside rover position. But Renton does not mind doing whatever it takes because he felt it was best for the team. And it seems as though that comes first as he continues with his senior season.

And while that is the primary objective, Renton also has a few things going for himself on the college-recruiting front as well.

"I have a lot of interest from the military academies and also a couple of others like Colorado State," Renton said. "Most of the coaches are telling me that they like the way I play. I haven't gotten any offers so far, but I feel like they are coming."

So how does he feel about possibly attending a military academy?

"I'm very interested in a military academy. Right now Navy, Army, and Air Force seem to be the Top 3," Renton said.

Late in 2007, Renton took a trip to Annapolis to check things out at Naval Academy and walked away impressed. After that camp/visit, Renton said that Navy was in his Top 3 according to Now, he looks to make a trip to Colorado to evaluate the environment at Air Force as well.

When seeking the right fit for college, many athletes look for familiar things or something they can relate to. He has already found that in more than one of the service academies thus far.

"We have been running the 3-4 (defense) at The Woodlands and that is what Air Force and Navy run," Renton said. "I think that me being familiar with that defense will help me out a lot. That means I will be prepared for that." Recommended Stories
