TEMPLE- In a battle of two story book programs with a combined 1375 wins and 9 state championships, Plano’s Rex Burkhead once again played the lead role scoring 3 first quarter touchdowns and six touchdowns overall for the evening in leading the Class 5A number three Plano Wildcats (4-0) to a 49-29 win over the Temple Wildcats (0-3) at Wildcat Stadium, not only did the Plano back get in the end zone six times he also accounted for over 300 all purpose yards for the night. Carson Meager was also outstanding throwing for 266 yards and two touchdowns on 14 of 19 passing for Plano.
The game was hyped by many to be a matchup of star running backs as Burkhead headlined Plano and junior RB Lache Seastrunk gets top billing for Temple. The showdown never materialized as Seastrunk didn’t get into the end zone until the third quarter when he showed off his sub 4.4 speed in the forty scoring on an 84 yards. Seastrunk finished with 145 yards on the ground while Baylor commit Tevin Reese hauled in 6 passes for 89 yards and he had a 76 yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter.
Burkhead scored 3 different ways in the first quarter to held Plano build a 21-6 advantage. The first score for Burkhead and Plano was on a 30 yard touchdown reception from Plano QB Carson Meager on a 4th and 9 play. After Temple had cut the lead to 7-6 on Marcus Jones’ four yard run, Burkhead struck again scoring from seven yards out to extend the margin to 14-6. After forcing a Temple three and out Burkhead returned a Chris Winkler punt 49 yards to pay dirt to close out the first quarter barrage.
Temple got a big break in the second quarter as it appeared Plano was going in for another score when Meager appeared to lose his grip on the ball and Temple DE D.J. Daniels picked the loose ball up on the hop and sprinted 86 yards to the Plano ten. Two plays later Jones scored his second touchdown of the evening from three yards out and it was 21-13 Plano. PSHS was quick to respond as Carson Meager threw a perfect pass to WR Cameron Swiney for a 14 yard touchdown and Plano led 28-16. Temple cut the lead to 28-16 as with less than 30 seconds left in the first half Chris Winkler nailed a 29 yard field goal. That was as close as Temple would get the rest of the evening.
In the second half Burkhead tacked on three more touchdown runs from 3,5, and 7 yards out as Plano put it on cruise control. Temple got a late touchdown as QB Kevin Lock threw a two yard touchdown pass to TE A.J. Coulter to round out the scoring.
The win for Plano marks the 700th win in the history of the school and Plano becomes only the third school in the state of Texas to reach the 700 win mark. Highland Park and Amarillo both reached the 700 win mark earlier this season.
