Mesquite – The Wylie Pirates (3-0, 0-0) continued to dominate on the ground as the Mesquite Horn Jaguars (1-2, 0-0) weren’t able to keep up with Johnny Jones and Nick Knott. Jared Monk continued to impress at quarterback failing to throw any interceptions for the 3rd consecutive week.

Wylie did not have a single drive last more than 1 minute 59 seconds. It took just 4 offensive plays to put the Pirates up 14-0. On their 1st play from scrimmage, Johnny Jones ran up the gut for a 73 yard touchdown. 3 plays into their second drive, Monk scrambled 17 yards into the end zone. Later in the 1st quarter, after a big sack by Devon Drake on 1st down fired up the defense, leading to a punt which was returned to the opposing 39 yard line, Monk found Logan Lambert for his second reception of the night. That drive ended in a 23 yard touchdown pass giving the Pirates a 21-0 lead.

Horn never gave up and converted on a crucial 4th and inches leading to a 13 play drive that eventually ending on a 2 yard run for a touchdown by quarterback Emory Miller. That score cut the lead to 21-7, but Horn couldn’t put together another solid drive in the first half. Wylie answered the call with 8:14 remaining in the 2nd quarter via a 22 yard run by halfback Nick Knott, earning Wylie those 7 points back. Wylie’s defense stifled Mesquite Horn on their next drive as they held them to a 3 and out. With 4:49 left in the half, Monk hit Justin Thompson in the end zone for a 9 yard touchdown, increasing their lead to 35-7.

As Horn looked to bounce back on their ensuing possession, Miller threw a nice pass to his receiver, but after a jarring hit knocked the ball back into the air, Corey Smith found his way to the ball for his 2nd interception of the night. After an unnecessary roughness penalty on Horn, Wylie only had 39 yards to go before capping the drive on a 3 yard run by Noah Cheshier. Wylie could not convert the 2-point conversion, yielding a 41-7 score. With 2 seconds to go in the half, Zac Ohannessian kicked a 32 yard field goal. Wylie led 44-7.

Horn continued to struggle on their opening possession of the second half. On 4th and 17, after a big sack by Nikita Whitlock on 2nd down and a stop for no gain, Whitlock blocked the punt setting up first and goal from the 8. Knott ran it to the outside for his 2nd touchdown. At the 10 minute mark of the 3rd quarter, Horn began a nice drive of their own. On 3rd and 3 from the 27, Miller threw a pass a nice pass to a wide open receiver. He was eventually brought down at the opposing 24 yard line. Travis Brewster ended the drive with a 17 yard run, cutting Wylie’s lead to 51-14 with 8:27 to go in the third quarter. Wylie would score twice more on a field goal of 23 yards, and a 9 yard run by Akwasi Achiaw. Horn also scored again, on a 5 yard pass to Tayler Gabriel. Wylie would go on to win the game by a final score of 60-21.

Wylie hosts Rowlett (2-1) next week at Pirate stadium and Horn travels to Ennis (2-0)
