There might not be a Class 3A team in the state with as much talent as Navasota and that was evident in the Rattlers' season opener as Jacolby Stokes and Brandal Jackson came up big. But who else across Central Texas showed up to help their team roll to victory.

CENTRAL TEXAS SUPER STUD OF THE WEEK: Jacolby Stokes, QB, Navasota

The Rattlers enter the 2008 season with high hopes for a long playoff run and if Stokes performs like he did in a 35-34 season opening win over Henderson, Navasota could be a tough out in late November. With Dexter Pratt rushing for only 65 yards on 17 carries Stokes carried the offense with 316 yards and three touchdowns on 19-of-22 passing while he led the Rattlers in rushing with 93 yards and added a pair of rushing touchdowns.

Jeff’s SUPER SEVEN Performances from Zero Week

Garrett Gilbert and Cade McCrary, Lake Travis
In winning their 15th straight game over Round Rock Westwood in the Alamodome, Gilbert found his go-to man in Coach Chad Morris’ spread scheme. The Texas bound signal caller hooked up with McCrary six times for 185 yards and all three of Gilbert’s touchdown passes went to McCrary. Gilbert hit in 17-of-23 passes for 312 yards on the night. Get used to seeing these two names on the ‘Super Seven’ list because they are sure to be here often this season.

Nyk McKissic, Glasco Martin, and Gerard Shillow, Round Rock Stony Point
Another set of teammates get the nod and rightfully so, especially considering the way the Tigers surprisingly dismantled Alamo Heights in a 58-16 romp. McKissic was 15-for-21 through the air throwing for 304 yards and three touchdowns, one of which went to Shillow as the junior receiver hauled in five passes for 161 yards. Martin did most of his damage in the first half as the Tigers built a 30-6 lead at intermission as he rushed for 173 yards on just 16 carries and reached the end zone three times.

Dedrick McKnight, RB, Cedar Park
The Timberwolves scored an impressive win over Austin Westlake in Zero Week thanks in large part to the play of their senior running back. McKnight racked up 161 yards on the ground and scored four touchdowns in Cedar Park 31-21 victory.

Emory Blake, WR, Austin High
A Scout.com three-star prospect, Blake is out to show what he can do when healthy and he did not disappoint in his first game of the season. Blake recorded six catches for 131 yards and two touchdowns in the Maroons’ 33-28 win over Harker Heights. A former quarterback, Blake also threw recorded a touchdown pass.

Brandal Jackson, WR, Navasota
The stud of the week had a partner in crime and Jackson came up big for the Rattlers when they needed him. The Texas A&M commit pulled down nine passes for a game-high 189 yards and was on the receiving end of all three of Stokes’ touchdown passes.

D.J. Johnson, QB, Austin St. Stephen’s
The Texas Tech bound defensive back is a nightmare to match up against at the Private School level. In a winning effort for the Spartans’ Johnson threw for 234 yards, rushed for 211 more, and totaled three touchdowns.

Steven Townsend and Brandon Freeman, Cameron Yoe
The Yoemen could be a surprise team in District 24-3A if Townsend can keep playing like he did in a 41-37 shootout victory over Waco Connally. Townsend rushed for 104 yards and scored a touchdown and threw for 254 yards and two scores on an 8-for-14 night under center. Freeman had four of those eight catches and was on the receiving end of both touchdowns to go along with 174 yards receiving.

HONORABLE MENTION: Itasca RB Desmond Guy, Troy RB Jeremy Conrad, Hutto RB Devin Carver, Copperas Cove DB’s Chris Miller and Rashad Hardy, Mart LB Caleb Freeman, Somerville RB Cody Holiday, Bryan RB Monterrell Washington, Bellville RB Garrett Nunn, Rockdale RB Cois Walker, and Killeen Ellison RB Daniel Cobb.
