2008 San Antonio District Preview: 27-5A

Converse Judson safety Anthony Moore

Converse Judson finished the 2007 regular season with a 6-4 record but still made it all the way to the Division I state title game largely due to their defense. The key pieces of that defense are back in 2008 as the Rockets enter the season looking to dominate their new district.

How They Rank:
1 – Converse Judson*
2 – Corpus Christi Carroll
3 – San Antonio East Central
4 – San Antonio Wagner*
5 – South San Antonio
6 – Corpus Christi King
7 – Victoria Memorial
8 – San Antonio Highlands

Jeff's Take:
If there is a team with a better defense in South Texas in 2008 than Judson then it is a team the rest of the state does not know about and that makes Coach Jim Rackley's club one of the best teams in the region, despite the fact that they will be plugging in several new faces on offense. The Rockets will rely on a defense that boasts four sure-fire Division I prospects led by defensive end Chris McAllister and safety Anthony Moore, both of whom are two of the top ten college prospects in the region. Judson fell one win shy of a state title last season and if the offense can come around, they are definitely capable of getting the job done in 2008. If anybody is going to push Judson, it will likely be Carroll because the Tigers have the offensive firepower to give Judson some problems, most notably running back Anthony Davis who rushed for over 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior. East Central has one of the region's top 2010 prospects in junior running back Chris Johnson (more than 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore) and one of the greater San Antonio area's top defenders in cornerback Corey Johnson (five interceptions in '07). East Central and Wagner enter the season as clearly the two best teams after Judson and Carroll as the Thunderbirds return 11 total starters from a team that went 4-6 in a very tough district last season.

Team on the Rise: Wagner
The Thunderbirds have spent the past two seasons with Judson in the murder's row that was the old 26-5A. Wagner scored three district wins last season and with the type of talent they have (they share a school district with Judson) there is no reason to believe that they cannot make the playoffs.

Team on the Decline: South San
The Bobcats were a playoff team last season despite finishing the year with a 4-7 record. It will be an uphill climb to make it back to postseason play in 2008 because the four teams picked ahead of them have more talent.

Best Non-District Game: Week 2, Pflugerville at Judson
Both of these teams reached the Class 5A title games last season and lost as Judson fell to Euless Trinity while Pflugerville was knocked off by Katy. Both of these teams have some holes to fill on offense so defense should dominate the day.

Best District Game: Week 10, Judson at Carroll
See 26-5A: If the predictions hold true then this regular season finale will be for the district title.
