2008 Team Insider: Channelview Falcons

2008 Team Insider: Channelview Falcons

Kerry Cooper continues the tour of Southeast Texas as he looks at one of the up and coming teams in 5A, Channelview Falcons.

Channelview will look to build on what they started last year in District 21 5A. One thing the Falcons will have to do though is fill alot of spots as Graduation hit Channelview hard. The Falcons return five players on Offense and just Three on Defense. Coach Hurts said the toughest job this offseason is looking to replace the likes of Garrett Beal, Cameron Bridgewater, Duriel Harris who have all moved on to the next level. In the New District with the addition of North Shore things just got alot tougher.

On Offense Running Back Denzel Granderson looks to be the one of the biggest threats returning for the Falcons. In 07 he ran for over 186 yards as a Sophomore. Fullback Earnest Thompson who had limited playing time last season will also help out in the Backfield. Coach Hurts says returning Quarterback Deanthony Broussard has plenty of experience and should be a great leader in 08. The strength of the Falcons Offense is the Offensive Line. Campbell, Watkins and Steward are all returning All District Players. "All three of these Lineman have gotten stronger during the Offseason and this will be a plus for our Offense" Says Hurts. At the Wide Reciever position the Falcons will be young but promising with the likes of Chris Hawkins and Leroy Ecby.

Defense is where the Falcons will be young but returning Defensive Tackle Tyrone Campbell (53 Tackles), Jarvis Smith, and Markeith Smith the Falcons will hope to keep Offenses in check this season as speed on Defense looks to be one of the Falcons strong points. Defensive end Paul Settles (JR) has the potential to be one of the better Ends in the District as well as SR Keithwick Spiller. "Depth is a concern for Channelview this season especially on Defense, so keeping kids healthy will be a big concern says Hurts".

The new District certainly didn't get any easier with the addition of Galena Park North Shore. The District otherwise remains the same with Beaumont West Brook, Port Arthur Memorial, Baytown Lee and Sterling. The three top teams predicted to win the District are North Shore, West Brook and Port Arthur Memorial but Coach Hurts hopes the experience on the Offensive Line and some speed on Defense and staying healthy will keep the Falcons in the race this season.
