Wichita Falls Punches State Ticket

Wichita Falls advanced to the 7 on 7 State Tournament for the first time as they won the Brownwood SQT on Saturday.

BROWNWOOD- The Wichita Falls Coyotes put together impressive performance Saturday to advance to the 7 on 7 State Tournament for the first time as they won the Brownwood SQT with a 4-1 record. WFHS knocked off Temple in the championship game, however the super talented Wildcats also punched a ticket to College Station with their runner up finish.

POOL A RECAP

In what turned out to be the most competitive pool; Abilene Cooper, Wichita Falls and Copperas Cove all took big shots at each other all morning with Wichita Falls being the team left standing. WFHS won the pool based on a total points tiebreaker despite losing to Copperas Cove. To open the day the eventual champs rolled past Bangs 41-20, while Abilene Cooper dispatched of Cove 38-13. In the game of the day Copperas Cove defeated Wichita Falls 46-45, WFHS scored on a 4th and goal from the two as time expired but failed on the conversion to send the game to overtime. Abilene Cooper then knocked off Bangs 44-25 in their second game. Facing a must win situation against a very good Abilene Cooper team which had already qualified WFHS stepped up in a big way to knock off Cooper 33-21 while Copperas Cove beat Bangs 39-6.

POOL B RECAP

Defending 7 on 7 champion Georgetown flexed its muscle today with an impressive performance going 3-0 in pool play. GHS got a stiff challenge from SQT host Brownwood, but the Eagles jumped out to a 20-7 halftime lead and held off a furious Brownwood rally to get a 38-32 win. In the one game of the pool that mattered San Antonio Clark knocked off Class 2A Eastland 32-21 to advance to the semi-finals as Brownwood and Georgetown had already qualified.

POOL C RECAP

The matchup of the day featured the two qualifiers in the pool, Lake Travis and Stephenville. Lake Travis with new HC Chad Morris who left Stephenville was highly motivated and in a heated battle they jumped out to a 22-7 halftime lead and held on for a 36-27 win. Temple however was the team who stole the show, the Wildcats despite missing some key defenders were clicking on all cylinders as they went through pool play with a 3-0 mark. After falling behind Stephenville early 14-0, Temple bounced back to beat the ‘Jackets 41-33 and then they knocked off Early and Lake Travis to advance.

POOL D RECAP

Abilene High who has already qualified rolled through this pool with a 3-0 mark, and the other three teams all finished with marks of 1-2. Class 3A Fredricksburg won the tiebreaker with total points over Brady and Midlothian. Abilene got their toughest test from the other qualifier in the pool Brady. The Eagles trailed Brady 12-7 at the half before responding with a 27-18 win, AHS also was tested by Midlothian but they took that one 28-22.
