TexasPrepInsider takes an in depth look at the
Lufkin SQT including pool predictions from two members of the TPI staff. This
tournament is absolutely loaded full of talent and has only two teams that have
already qualified for the 7on7 state tournament in College Station.
*Team has already qualified
Pool A-
Lufkin: With two teams in their pool
having already qualified the only game that matters will be against new District
14-5A rival New Caney. Talent wise this should be a no brainer with kids like SR
QB Jeffery Claybon, SR RB Trevon Lewis, JR DB Carrington Byndom and SR DB
Demarquez Freeman.
*Klein: The Bearcats have looked like a
team on a mission all summer as they have won a SQT already and last weekend
went 3-0 in pool play. RB Patrick Johnson and RB Dekota Barnes are fast as
lightning and DB/WR Tyler Boss just seems to be all over the field at times.
*Houston Chavez: The Lobos have already
qualified and will get a real test of how good they are going up against Klein
and Lufkin. SR QB Andre Cole and SR RB Mark Cole lead the offense and the
defense will be held down by SR S Roland Veal SR CB Chris Porter.
New Caney: The Eagles get welcomed into 5A
by having to face Lufkin in district play and they will get a taste of it here
during 7on7 as well. JR WR Joey Hibner, SR RB Joey Sullivan and JR RB Chad
Jackson will try to get points on the board while SR LB Zac Barfield will try to
shore up the defense.
Jay’s Pick: Lufkin
AZ’s Pick: Lufkin
Pool B-
Klein Collins: New coaching staff means
new schemes and this is a perfect way for the Tigers to learn it against varsity
speed. LB/RB Malcolm Johson and LB Jesse Beauchamp will try to ralley the group.
The Tigers looked very impressive last weekend at the A&M Consolidated SQT.
Kingwood: The Mustangs are led offensively
by QB Geofffrey Perrot, RB Michael Schrang and WR/DE Robert Singletary.
Diboll: The Lumberjacks have already
qualified for the Class 3A and under State Championship but since Weslaco pulled
out they will try their hand at a little bigger of a prize. They will definitely
get some good work in as they will face a solid 4A team along with two 5A teams,
but don’t count them out!
Lumberton: The Raiders will try to build
off an unreal fall performance and will have players like RB/DE Jacob Hanna, LB
Anthony Beard and WR Taylor Granato.
Jay’s Pick: Klein Collins
AZ’s Pick: Lumberton
Pool C-
Beaumont Ozen: The Panthers have a
challenge getting out of this tough pool but if they do a big day will be needed
from 6-6 WR Willie Jefferson, LB Justin Isadore and DB Breon Johnson.
Oak Ridge: The War Eagles don’t run your
typical 7on7 type of offense but when you have kids like RB Freddie Dotson, QB
Ryan Cyr, DB Demarcus Fitch and LB Jay Buchanan on the field anything can
happen.
Huntsville: The Hornets may have been 5-5
last season but they are just stacked with athletes and they can definitely
throw the ball around with QB Justin Gilbert and WR Howard Brown. The defense
will be ok with LB Kirby Ennis, LB Shaquille Ross and DB James Davidson.
Klein Forest: KF has played in two SQT’s
so far and lost a tie breaker by 2 points and a game in OT that would have
gotten them qualified. Athletes like JR LB Cameron Nwosu, WR/DB Vernon Rogers,
WR/DB Damian Payne, QB Vernell Caldwell and RB Dominic Wilkins will always make
every game close.
Jay’s Pick: Klein Forest
AZ’s Pick: Klein Forest
Pool D-
Houston Stratford: Experience will be key
here after the lose of team leader QB Andrew Luck but a few players that do have
it are RB Rodney Anderson, DB Jackie Simmons and WR Brett Benninger.
Montgomery: With the Bears loss of QB/DB
Xavier Webb to Rice it may be a tough season but players that need to step up
are RB Elliot Brown, TE Colby Ogletree and CB Brock Moss.
LaMarque: When you think LaMarque you
think athletic and this year is no different with LB Jonathan Wev, DB D.J.
Johnson and WR Requan Jones.
PA Memorial: The Titans have a ridiculous
amount of talent on the both sides of the ball but can they put it all together?
QB Jareal Alexander, LB Earl Hines and DB Desmon Gardiner are among the best of
the bunch.
Jay’s Pick: PA Memorial
AZ’s Pick: PA Memorial
