Another one of many first time SQT sites hosts this week as Coppell will host. Pool play will begin at 9:00am at WagonWheel Park in Coppell while the semi-finals and finals will take place at Coppell HS. Two spots for the 7 on 7 State Championship at Texas A&M are on the line. Much like last week several teams will be missing key players due to testing and various camps.
POOL A
Coppell- The Cowboys two weeks ago locked up their second straight trip to the State Tournament, and now they are in the mode of trying to work some younger players in. Don’t look for a strong performance from CHS as several of their regular players will likely not be in attendance.
Plano West- With their first trip to the State Tournament already in the bag, the Wolves will be another team who has things on cruise control. West offensively was very impressive in their second place performance at Plano’s SQT on May 31. Look for Plano West to bring younger players and get some work as they try and get some more depth developed.
Arlington Martin- The Warriors are playing their second SQT of the summer and things don’t well on May 24 at Colleyville Heritage as MHS posted an 0-3 mark. Martin is breaking in several younger players this year and I expect them to struggle.
Midlothian- The Panthers haven’t seemed in sync all summer as they haven’t posted more than one win in a SQT all summer. Last week at Southlake Carroll, MHS posted a 1-2 mark with the only win coming against the Southlake Carroll JV squad. QB Bryce Petty leads the Midlothian offense but he’ll need his skill players to step up and make some plays for the Panthers to make a serious run at qualifying.
Little Matt’s Pick: Midlothian
Big Matt’s Pick: Midlothian
POOL B
Wylie- The Pirates have enjoyed some success this summer after missing the State Tournament in 2007, the Pirates won their SQT last week to advance to College Station. QB Jared Monk doesn’t have any big time receivers but as a unit they are deadly. Wylie does have some defensive issues but they can score with anyone.
Plano East- The Panthers posted a 2-1 mark at the Plano SQT two weeks ago, falling to eventual champion Rockwall Heath in pool play. PESH has made two straight State Tournaments, but in order to make it three in a row the Panthers will need to avoid the costly mistakes they made in their loss to Heath. DB Josh Peprah and RB Toben Opurum are the players to watch for the Panthers.
Richland- The Rebels made a strong run last week at the Southlake Carroll SQT posting a 3-0 mark in pool play, but they ran into a buzz saw in Arlington in the semi-finals. RHS still had a solid offensive showing throughout the day and although they won’t be able to match up athletically with the teams in their pool, Richland is a sleeper pick to make noise.
South Grand Prairie- SGP made a surprising run in their first ever SQT two weeks ago at Plano advancing all the way to the semi-finals before a heart breaking loss to Plano West in the semi-finals. The Warriors have a pair of big time WR’s in Dewayne Peace and Will Adams and on defense Thomas Ferguson is one of the best around. SGP with their talent has to be considered the favorite to win the pool.
Little Matt’s Pick: South Grand Prairie
Big Matt’s Pick: Plano East
POOL C
Arlington Lamar- The Vikings have yet to lose in a SQT this season as they are now 11-0. Lamar is an early favorite to win the State Tournament, but a lot of things can change. Lamar will likely send as many of their regulars to this SQT as possible before sending a younger squad out to Tyler Lee next week to get some work in.
Duncanville- The Panthers behind a suffocating defense advanced to the State Tournament for the first time last week at Southlake Carroll, Dashaun Phillips led the charge while a gimpy Chayse Joubert made several tough catches to pace the offense which is still jelling behind QB Larry Miller.
Rockwall- The Yellow Jackets made a run to the semi-finals last week at the Wylie SQT, but they took one on the chin in a blowout loss to Wylie. Look Rockwall to bounce back this week as I expect them to win their pool as with Lamar and Duncanville already qualified RHS is the heavy favorite to beat SQT newcomer Flower Mound.
Flower Mound- This will be the Jaguars first SQT, and although I expect them to compete well, I can’t see them making it out of the pool. Although the success of SQT newcomers in DFW could give Jag fans hope. QB Brandon Colquitt leads the offense while DB Michael Williams paces the defensive effort.
Little Matt’s Pick: Rockwall
Big Matt’s Pick: Rockwall
POOL D
Lewisville Hebron- The Hawks have to be considered one of the top five teams in DFW in 7 on 7 however they won’t be at full strength this week. Hebron is missing several key players who will be out for various reasons, but with a state spot already secured Hebron will just look to get some younger players work in a tough pool.
Arlington Bowie- Bowie is fresh off a 7-0 performance in Louisville last week and the Volunteers are looking to lock up their spot at the state tournament before they host their own SQT in two weeks. BHS fell in a heartbreaker to AISD rival Lamar in the semi-finals at Colleyville Heritage three weeks ago. Led by QB Christian Mathews, I expect the Volunteers to advance.
Southlake Carroll- The Dragons will have their baseball players back in the fold this week or will they? We are expecting SLC to be missing a few players who will be out for tests or at college camps, the question is do the Dragons have enough to get past Bowie and qualify at less than 100%?? Not this year, the Dragons are solid but they don’t have the game breakers they’ve had in the past.
Coppell JV- Coppell’s JV rounds out the field of 16.
Little Matt’s Pick: Arlington Bowie
Big Matt’s Pick: Arlington Bowie
SEMI-FINALS
Little Matt’s Pick: South Grand Prairie over Midlothian and Arlington Bowie over Rockwall
Big Matt’s Pick: Plano East over Midlothian and Arlington Bowie over Rockwall
