ROUND ROCK- Despite missing Texas commit QB Garrett Gilbert, the Lake Travis Cavaliers showed they still have plenty of depth and talent as they won the Round Rock SQT in emphatic fashion with a 55-7 rout of Round Rock Westwood at Dragon Stadium Saturday afternoon. Westwood despite the loss still managed to qualify for the 7 on 7 State Tournament July 11-12 on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station.
Qualifying for the tournament wasn’t easy as both teams had to shake off tough losses in pool play to advance. Westwood started out slow falling to Hutto 20-19 in their opening game before rattling off three straight wins including an 18-7 win over defending 7 on 7 State Champion Georgetown in the semi-finals to clinch. Lake Travis won a tough pool fighting off Austin Bowie 41-35 before falling to Pflugerville 31-27. LTHS rebounded to roll past Kyle Lehman 57-6 to win Pool B on a tiebreaker as Pflugerville fell to Austin Bowie in their final game of pool play. In the semi-finals Lake Travis got down 14-0 early to Austin High and trailed 28-14 early in the second half before roaring back to with 21 straight points to knock off the Maroons 35-28.
