When the dust settles on the 2009 recruiting season, it could go down as one of the best ever for South Texas. Some of the San Antonio area's biggest names will be heading to the UA/Scout.com combine at Valley Ranch this weekend looking to show their impressive skills.

Like most of the recruiting areas in Texas, 2009 is shaping up to be a special year in South Texas.

The area, more specifically the Greater San Antonio area, is home to some top flight Division I prospects in this recruiting cycle and several of those marquee prospects are scheduled to be on hand at Saturday’s Under Armour/Scout.com Combine at Valley Ranch.

The biggest name from the South Texas contingent is New Braunfels linebacker Tom Wort. Wort is in all likelihood the 2009 version of Sam McGuffie as like McGuffie, his name spread like wildfire once his highlight tape hit youtube.com earlier this spring. Blessed with off-the-charts range and being a ferocious hitter, Wort pulled in offers from the likes of LSU, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and USC before he gave a verbal commitment to Oklahoma earlier this week.

Another gifted athlete on the defensive side of the ball that is scheduled to be in Dallas this weekend is Converse Judson defensive end Chris McAllister. Currently rated as the 12th best strong side linebacker in the country, the three star prospect has already picked up offers from Houston and Tulsa. He plays defensive end for the Rockets but will likely move to outside linebacker in college and on Saturday he will have a chance to show that he has the speed and quickness necessary to make the switch.

McAllister’s teammate at Judson, safety Anthony Moore, has been drawing a lot interest from programs like Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and UCLA and he will also be in Dallas on Saturday.

Another prospect from the Alamo City that is seeing his stock rise, seemingly by the day, is Alamo Heights quarterback Drew Allen. In his debut season for the Mules the 6-foot-5, 205-pound Allen threw for more than 2,500 yards and 28 touchdowns and has already made unofficial visits to Auburn, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, and SMU.

Also heading to Dallas will be 2010 offensive lineman Robert Chapman of San Antonio Clark, who might be the best true center junior prospect in the state.
