Realignment did no favors for Bridgeport this season. Decatur was about the toughest team that Bridgeport played all year, and the game against Decatur was for the district championship. Teams like Sanger and Gainesville provided tune-ups for the playoffs. This year, Decatur and Bridgeport could be playing for the last playoff spot with Burkburnett and Vernon having had significantly more success the last two years. Bridgeport does return 14 starters from last year's tri-district champions, and the underclass has a total of 14 victories between them. With nearly 4000 yards of returning offense, Coach Henson has to be excited about this season's chances. Each year, Bridgeport has found a way to have a top notch quarterback or running back to saddle up. This year, Cameron Green will be that player. He threw for 2800 yards and ran for another 700 yards. He accounted for 18 touchdowns with a 2 to 1 touchdown to interception ratio. He should be a quality player for the offense. Dustin Krebs will be his go-to player. The offensive line is a bit of a question for Bridgeport. Erick Serafin is the best returning line - but last year, Bridgeport had a horrible time protecting the quarterback and getting running lanes. The receivers did most of the grunt work. The last couple of seasons the offense has had to carry the load with a porous defense. This season, we can expect more from the defense. The defense gave up 34 plus points four times last season. This season, they look to get back into hard nosed football. There is quite a bit of speed in the secondary this season with Dustin Krebs, Corbin Green and Trevor Schuett. The linebacker corps looks pretty impressive with Zach Bracken returning with over 100 tackles and Blake Waldrep with 40 tackles in only half a season. Mike Garcia is not a huge playmaker but a solid gap-filler, and he is a sure tackler. The defensive line will be the point of contention. If it can jell, Bridgeport has the capability of having a top 10 3A area defense with the speed and team size/speed. I do see Bridgeport finding a way to make the playoffs. They do have too much talent not to make it - even in a tougher loop. Many have criticized the defense for Bridgeport in the past - with the Bulls being very likely to get into shootouts. They gave up 39 points in their playoff loss. The offense has to be perfect. This year, the offense might allowed to be human. I don't think they'll repeat as district champions, but I like them in the third position. Bridgeport has made the playoffs 10 of the last 12 years, and I would consider them a heavy favorite to make it 11 out of 13. Coach Henson has created a quality program in Bridgeport. They used to not make the playoffs, and now he has them in the thick of things every year. That type of tradition will be hard to keep out this season.
