Baker who is 5'10 180 pounds runs a 4.4 forty yard dash and he boasts a 32 inch vertical leap along with a 275 pound bench press max. In 2006 Baker started at LB for Garland and he notched 8 sacks and 1st team all 10-5A honors in helping the Owls advance all the way to the Class 5A Division II State Semi-Finals.
"I think my speed and football smarts are my two biggest strengths, this summer I'm really focused on being healthy and getting back to 100% and working on learning my new position on defense," said Baker when asked about his strengths and weaknesses.
Colorado currently leads the race to land the Garland DB who also may spend some time at RB this season. "I really like Colorado, the atmosphere is cool and I love the location," replied Baker. Kansas, California, Oregon and Rice are also in the mix to land Baker.
This summer Steven will be trying to lead Garland to their first ever trip to the seven on seven state tournament which will be held at Texas A&M University this July and he'll be attending camps at Kansas and Colorado.
When asked what he's looking for in a college Steven was quick to respond with location, campus atmosphere, tradition and academics. Baker who plans on majoring in Kinesiology says he's not too sure on a timetable for a decision but if the right offer comes along he could be an early commit.
2007 was a rough year for not only Steven but his Garland teammates as well as GHS posted an uncharacteristic 3-7 record, "I really want to rebound and help the team win and get back to not only winning district but making a playoff run. We are going to take it one game at a time, but I think we have what it takes to be successful."
