Originally Spring Westfield defensive back Nick Sampson had other plans in regards to his college recruitment. But a coaching change veered him into another direction and he never looked back.
With top choices like SMU, Houston, and UTEP as his final options, the 6-foot-0, 190-pound Sampson decided today would be the day to make his final decision.
“It pretty much came down to three schools, but because of a coaching change at SMU, I’m going to UTEP,” Sampson said. “I had to decide what was best for me and the coaching change helped me change my mind.”
Sampson explained how SMU and UTEP were running neck and neck, but in the end the Miners came away on top.
“Well UTEP and SMU were pretty much equal to me,” Sampson said. “Earlier, it was SMU because it was a little closer to me and that is why I chose them at first. But UTEP is a good program and when I went down there, I saw there was an opportunity to do good things. I will get the chance to play early and be a big impact on the program.”
He finished his senior season with 60 tackles, five interceptions, and three touchdowns. He said after talking with the coaches, free safety is the position he is likely to play.
And with the addition of a new defense, Sampson is excited to get started.
“I have the opportunity to leave and go down there in July to work out with the team as a true freshman,” Sampson said. “Coach is bringing in a new defense with three safeties (a rover, free and strong safety). That will give me even a better chance to play. I will bring a winner’s attitude to the school. I am coming there to make that program better and put a ring on our finger.”
