The Westfield Mustangs have had a difficult season so far
compared to what they are used to in the recent past. Losing to Cy Falls
because of a 4th quarter collapse and to Memorial because they were
offensively shut down caused problems for the Mustangs, but definitely nothing
that could not be fixed! The Mustangs have outscored their opponents 103-7 in
the past 3 games this year and they look like they are back!
Well there was absolute nothing fancy about this game but
old fashioned defense, grind it out rushing attack, and well…..some very sloppy
play. Klein Forest had it going on early as they struck first on a 5 yard TD run
by JR RB Dominic Wilkins with 2:42 left in the first quarter. The celebration
did not last very long as the Mustangs struck right back less than :30 seconds
later with a reverse for a 74 yard TD by JR WR Adam Watson that tied the score
at 7-7. With 6:14 left in the second quarter Westfield hit paydirt again with a
3 yard TD scamper by SR RB Bo Walker. The very next offensive play for Klein
Forest was a wide receiver reverse that was fumbled and picked up by the Mustang
defense. They gladly took advantage as SOPH QB Jacoby Walker threw up a fade to
the back left corner of the endzone to JR WR Barry Ford for a TD that gave
Westfield a 21-7 lead that remained till the half.
The second half proved to be the defensive battle that most
everybody projected this game to be. The only score of the entire second half
came with 9:30 left in the third quarter as JR K Ernest Lazo hit a FG from 30
yards out that made the score 24-7. Klein Forest had multiple chances in the
second half to put points on the board but came up just short. Klein Forest
probably had the most explosive plays on offense if you look at the hilights
from the game (bottom of article) but turnovers and dropped passes that
sputtered drives.
Klein Forest SR QB Ford Lakin finished 7-15 passing for
only 41 yards and 9 rushes for 50 yards. The Golden Eagles took no real shots
down the field but elected to run a lot of screen plays that the Westfield
defense ate up. The Mustangs only had 6 players in the box at times and confused
the Klein Forest passing game with looks they could never find an answer to. SR
WR Deonte Patrick had 4 receptions for 30 yards. JR RB Dominic Wilkins had 20
carries for 64 yards and a TD. Westfield SR RB Bo Walker had 33 carries for a
game high 97 yards and a TD. SOPH QB Jacoby Walker was 4-6 for 66 yards and a
TD. JR WR Barry Ford had 2 receptions for 36 yards and a TD. The loss puts Klein
Forest at 5-1 overall and 1-1 in district play. Westfield goes to 5-2 with the
win and 3-0 in district play so far this season.
