Houston commit shows his versatility

Pearland's Nick Saenz

Pearland DB Nick Saenz came on the scene last year as a newcomer and hit the recruiting radar hard after a standout junior season. That level of play brought him national attention and he ultimately committed to Houston. Now as a senior, he is making contributions to the team on both sides of the ball. TPI caught up with Saenz in Week 5 to talk about the win over Brazoswood.

Pearland defensive back Nick Saenz has already been labeled as one of the top defenders in the Greater Houston area. After a breakout junior season when he recorded eight interceptions, college recruiters began contacting him. With more than five offers on the table, Saenz decided on the hometown team in Houston over the summer.

Now that recruiting process is out of the way, he can concentrate on his senior season and team success. Pearland is 4-1 on the season and the Oilers are coming off a big 28-16 victory in Week 5 over Brazoswood. Saenz, even though he is still one of the defensive leaders, plays wherever his team needs him.

"I like playing on both sides of the ball," Saenz said in regards to his 20-yard touchdown catch in the Brazoswood game. "I am pretty comfortable doing it and we keep winning. I will play wherever I need to contribute to the team."

Besides the touchdown catch, Saenz made a big play on special teams when he recovered a blocked kick and returned it 93 yards for a touchdown. Defensively, he has three interceptions on the year and averages about five tackles a game.

And as far as his commitment to Houston, he is still waiting to wear the Cougar uniform.

"My commitment to Houston is solid," Saenz said. "I have gone to a few games and I talk to the defensive coordinator the morning after every game."
