A game surrounded by so much hype and media could never
live up to the expectations, right? Just a few things you need to know about the
Miami Northwestern (FL) vs Southlake Carroll (TX) first. Celebrities were found
verywhere including such high profiles as Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin, Nate
Newton, and Run (from MTV). The attendance was an overflow of 31,896 inside Ford
Stadium on the SMU campus and it was broadcasted by the ESPN network. The
national # 1 team vs the national # 2 team. Each team ranked # 1 in their
respective states. Southlake Carroll was riding a 49 game winning streak coming
into the game and has won the last three 5A Texas state titles while Miami
Northwestern won the Florida 6A title last season. Carroll also had not lost a
regular season game since November 9, 2001. Well, the game did live up to the
hype!
The teams traded scoring punches evenly throughout the
first half as the halftime score was knotted up at 21-21. Carroll got on the
board first with a SR QB Riley Dodge TD pass to SR WR Chris Brainard.
Northwestern struck right back with a hookup from SR QB Jacory Harris to SR WR
Tommy Streeter that covered 32 yards. The Carroll defense later stripped the
ball and SR LB Derek Tomlin scooped it up and took it to the endzone 33 yards
later. The Bulls responded right back once again with another Harris to Streeter
hookup, this time 19 yards. Jacory Harris threw another TD pass as well but it
was matched when SR WR Blake Cantu caught a Dodge pass inside the 4 down the
sideline and took it in for 6 points as well. SR RB Tre’ Newton caught a pass
out of the backfield and took it over 20 yards but fumbled inside the
Northwestern 10 yard line just before the first half ended. The second half
provided another Bulls TD and missed extra point that gave them a 27-21 lead.
The last 2 points of the game which gave the final score of 29-21 was because of
a bad snap that sailed over the Carroll punter and e ran back and kicked the
ball out of the endzone to give the Bulls the safety. The Dragons had multiple
chances to put more points on the board, but they were just not meant to be. A
FG attempt by SOPH K Cade Foster which hit the post and fell short, a Dodge
injury that led to backup JR QB Kyle Padron leading a series in which he was
picked off in the endzone, and a dropped TD pass in the last few minutes that
was knocked out by a Northwestern DB are just a few of the chances that slipped
out of reach for SLC.
Northwestern SR WR Tommy Streeter played like he was in a
video game as he had 4 receptions for 140 yards and 3 TD. SR QB Jacory Harris
was 21-28 with 282 yards and 4 TD. SLC SR QB Riley Dodge managed to go 22-29
with 3 TD passes but had 2 INT.
