Duncanville-Mans. Summit Scrimmage Report

Mansfield Summit took a few plays to get going but once they did they were able to match what should be a much improved Duncanville squad big play for big play on Saturday morning.

MANSFIELD- In what started out as an apparent mismatch turned into a very interesting and evenly matched scrimmage on Saturday morning at the Mansfield ISD Stadium between the Duncanville Panthers and the Mansfield Summit Jaguars. Summit struggled at first as Duncanville for the most part had their way during a lengthy controlled portion of the scrimmage, but SHS eventually found their way in the scrimmage and went toe to toe with the Panthers.

Summit’s first offense took the first series of plays in the controlled portion of the scrimmage and they struggled to move the ball against a quick and aggressive DHS defense. Summit failed to move the ball past midfield in their set. Duncanville’s first offense was led by QB Larry Miller who threw two touchdown passes on their series, one was a 70 yard toss on a botched Summit coverage and the other was a 32 yard toss where the receiver made a great lunging grab.

Mansfield Summit’s second team offense was able to move the ball much better but dropped passes and the quick Duncanville defensive line continued to give the Jaguars problems. Near the end of the series the Summit backup QB hooked up with one of his wideouts for a sensational 70 yard catch and run touchdown to finally give the Jaguars some momentum. Duncanville’s second offense was also able to throw one score up as their backup QB scored from two yards out.

Summit’s first offense came back out and seemed to get the passing game going a bit, however their initial drive was stopped inside the 20 as a Duncanville DB got an INT. The rest of the series of plays Summit was unable to move the ball against the Panthers defense. Duncanville’s first offense continued to also move the ball through the air, however they were unable to punch it in. The two team’s backup offenses came back out and again the defenses held true to form as neither squad was able to put the ball in the end zone.

The two teams then played one live quarter with the score ending tied at 14. Duncanville struck first as Miller scored on a 10 yard touchdown run to make it 7-0 DHS. Summit responded quickly as Erike Parker would score on a 10 yard run to tie things at 7. Duncanville would be forced to punt on their drive, while Summit threw and interception. Duncancville would take advantage of the short field and RB Darein Hayes would score on a two yard run to make it 14-7 DHS with less than a minute left. Summit would respond quickly throwing their second 70 yard touchdown pass of the scrimmage to close the scoring at 14 all.

Next week, Mansfield Summit will host Arlington High while Duncanville will have one more scrimmage before opening the season in two weeks against Richardson Berkner.
