Mayde Creek finished 2006 with a 2-8 record. The Rams reload this season with 13 returning starters and new coach Lance Carter. His last stop at Houston Westside High School, Carter turned that program into a well-oiled machine that advanced to the area playoff round.
According to Carter, defense will be the strength of the team and that starts with defensive end Jowyn Ward. Ward recorded 71 tackles and two sacks as a junior. Blake Russell and Jacob Freeman will also man that position. Michael Murphy and Nelson Solomon are the Rams' other defensive linemen.
At linebacker, Chase Hooper (46 tackles in 2006) leads the ‘backer corp. Justin Roberson is the other returnee. In the secondary, Chris West leads a group that includes: Lamar Coward, Ryan Cook, and Mason Hooper.
Offensively, Will Handlin will be the Rams' starting quarterback after taking very few snaps as a junior. Joining Handlin in the backfield is speedy running back TJ Keys and Devown Hines who will both see some time in the backfield.
The receiving corp will be Joseph Delgado, Justin Giglio, and newcomer Brady Atkinson. Holding down the front line is Scott Gonzales, along with Joseph Secrest and Patrick Chamberlain.
Coward will likely handle the return duties after averaging over 18 yards a return last season.
With the defensive unit that the Rams should have, there is definitely a strong possibility for more wins. This, and the edition of Carter, will likely help Mayde Creek be a contender in the 18-5A district.
