TPI 5A W. Texas Top 10: #4 Lubbock Monterey

The Plainsmen managed to advance all the way to the Regional Semi-Finals before bowing out to Colleyville Heritage 24-10. Can Monterey overcome the loss of a stellar senior class and maintain dominance on the High Plains?

It was a sensational season in 2006 for Monterey as the Plainsmen rolled to an 11-2 record led by a senior laden club. 2007 could be a bit of a rebuilding year as many young players will be forced to grow up quickly.

On offense Monterey will likely be led by QB John Paul Floyd who doesn't have a lot of speed but is a good decision maker. His top target in the passing game will be WR Patrick McNamara who at 6'4 is a big target, McNamara had 4 touchdowns receiving in 2006. Keep en eye on RB Devron Jeffrey. Look for Monty to have a solid offensive line despite the youth.

MHS returns two starters on the defensive side of the ball, and the strength of the defensive will be the front seven. DL Chris Penick is the top returner as he was named second team all 2-5A in 2006. Joe Wilborn and Kendal Lilly will join Penick on what should be a solid front seven. LB Chris Rivera is the top returning tackler back as he posted 43 tackles in 2006. The secondary is a question mark heading into the 2007 season.

Monterey will be hard pressed to repeat their performance of 2006, but under HC James Morton they have developed into one of the better programs in West Texas. They'll be a solid playoff contender and will be very good in 2008.
