TPI 4A DFW Early Top 20 #12 Waxahachie

Check out the DFW Early 4A Top 20 poll. This article is for our premium insider readers only. At #12 we take a look at Waxahachie who will try and get back to the postseason in a brutal District 15-4A.

Most observers thought it would be a down year for Waxahachie in 2006 as the Indians featured a young team that was full of unproven players. After a one-sided loss to Highland Park to open up the season the Indians won 7 of their next 8 games before back to back heart breaking losses to arch-rival Ennis to end the regular season and a tough loss to eventual state runner-up Copperas Cove in the bi-district playoffs. The Tribe brings back many key skill players but holes on both lines are main concerns heading into 2007.

The Waxahachie offense revolves around QB Boomer Collins who gives the Indians a tremendous running threat at QB, Collins put up huge numbers as a junior earning District 15-4A Player of the Year honors. WR Ryan Wilson is an excellent threat at QB besides being the backup QB, he earned second team all-district honors. Waxahachie must replace the graduated Kinnorise Dickerson at RB, however the Indians never have a shortage of talented backs coming up the ranks. Drew Harrison was also named second team all-district at TE, but he could move to the offensive line to provide assistance to the young offensive line also look for potential blue chip LB Gary Mason to possibly see time on the offensive line.

On Defense Waxahachie will be led by the aforementioned Mason, who has battled injuries the past two seasons is finally healthy and ready to cause havoc. The defensive line will be led Tom Flores who despite being on the small side was a first team all 15-4A pick. Duke Bohall is the top returner from the secondary for WHS as he was second team all 15-4A. Defense will be a concern for the Indians with a lot of youth and inexperience moving in.

If Waxahachie's defense matures and plays up to par then once again they'll be a playoff squad, but any sort of slip could cause the Indians to possibly miss out on the postseason in the ultra competitive District 15-4A that features six teams that could make the playoffs in most other districts. As always the big question in Ellis County will be "When will the streak end?" As in when will the Indians end their long losing streak to Ennis, a win over the Lions in Week 10 will go a long way in securing Waxahachie's playoff fate
