The 5'11 180 pound cornerback who runs the forty in 4.48 seconds had 53 tackles and 7 interceptions in 2006 as he played a key role for the Cowboys in their 8-3 season. The Cowboys were eliminated in the Class 5A bi-district playoffs by the high-powered Colleyville Heritage offense. Smith also chipped in on offense with 8 touchdowns rushing, as he earned first team all 6-5A honors and third team Class 5A All-State honors and Devin was even a big contributor on special teams as he returned a punt for a touchdown.
Smith as a sophomore was named 6-5A sophomore of the year had 5 interceptions to go along with 45 tackles. Devin besides having great speed also boasts tremendous strength for a defensive back as he has a bench press max of 300 pounds, a squat max of 390 pounds and he has a 34 inch vertical leap.
Devin besides leading the Cowboys secondary is also a member of the CHS track team specializing in sprints. "I think my big strengths have to be my awareness and my one on one cover skills, I think this off-season I will focus mainly on speed, agility and strength which are areas you can always improve in."
Boston College, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Louisville, Texas and Texas Tech have all shown interest in the defensive back from Coppell. Smith says at this time LSU looks to be the favorite, "I'll be attending LSU's junior day on Feb. 24 and they have shown me the most interest."
Last summer Devin kept busy playing seven on seven for Coppell, but look for a much busier schedule this summer for Smith. "I attended the All-American Combine in San Antonio already, and I plan on making mini-camps at Oklahoma, LSU and Alabama along with some seven on seven," said the Coppell CB.
Devin says he isn't sure about a timetable for any kind of verbal, "I will make a decision based on the offer, if I get the right offer I'll commit early." Smith who plans on majoring in either Business Administration or Law says academics will be the number one factor in deciding where he lands. As for 2007 Smith has high hopes, "Last year we got a taste of the playoffs, my senior year I would like to make a deep run into the playoffs and I think we have the talent to get it done."
