Whitener Still a Bear

Whitener Still a Bear

We caught up with Mansfield (Tx) linebacker and California commitment Chad Whitener following the firing of Cal head coach Jeff Tedford Tuesday. While Whitener remains committed to the Bears, he will be making a visit elsewhere next week.

"I wasn't necessarily surprised," said Whitener on news of the firing. "I'd been reading things on the internet the last couple weeks, people talking about it. I think it could actually be good, get a new face in there. Change can be good."

"I'm still committed, though."

That said, Whitener has set up an official visit to TCU for next weekend's game with Oklahoma. He will be attending with Mansfield teammate and TCU safety commit George Baltimore.

It will be his first official. He admits "TCU is really the only other school I'm talking to right now."

Whitener has not yet made an official to California. While he unofficially visited for the Oregon game, he looks to make a Cal official in "early January."

He noted linebackers coach Kenwick Thompson is the largest reason he is still committed to the Bears.

"That's my guy. We've gotten close," said Whitener. "I was honestly closer to him than I was Coach Tedford."

"It's been a crazy day. Not sure how it's all going to pan out, but I'm excited to find out."

After knocking Killeen 41-21 in the opening round of the Texas-5A playoffs last week, Whitener and his Tigers advance to face Euless Trinity Saturday in a 2:00 p.m. CT matchup at Birdville Fine Arts/Athletic Complex.
